They like the story the statues tell.
The history books point out that they were foolish to begin with, the north had most of the manufacturing, railroads, etc. Their general were traitors to the nation they vowed to protect. After thousands were maimed and murdered, Sherman rubbed their noses in their stupidity and they threw in the towel.
Had this failed insurrection been in say Russia or China, the outcome would have been somewhat more dire.

Yup. We already understood we were conquered but those statues meant business lol, which makes all the hand-wringing over them coming down quite comical.
