AND -- so far it is being said that this building was in poor repair. No terrorist link.

Let's see how the story unfolds.
That is what I read early on: that residents had complained about the building being a 'death trap', with some group filing suits or such in 2013.

Here is an interesting article from The Daily Mail:

London fire: 6 confirmed dead after Grenfell Tower blaze | Daily Mail Online

Included in said link:

"New plastic rain-proof cladding encasing the building in £10million refurbishment 'went up like a match' and helped fire spread quickly from fourth floor to 27th floor - although the contractor insists it was safe."

There are reports that residents of the building had been complaining about safety issues for months....

residents say the fire alarm didn't ring Wednesday, and that they had complained for years to local authorities about building safety in vain.

The Grenfell Action Group, a community organization, says it has repeatedly warned about the risk of fire at the building since 2013. The group has raised concerns about testing and maintenance of firefighting equipment and about blocked emergency access to the site in recent years.

This must have been a big screw up by someone..along with poor evacuation procedures. You just don't see death tolls from fires like this in the modern world.

This is truly sad. Apparently this building was of some concern for years.

On another note, this is another building that has survived a sustained overnight fire without collapsing into it's footprint.

Building 7 was a controlled demolition.

Unfortunately it sounds as if nobody survived who was on the top 3 floors. Death toll is now at 12.

I watched it for a bit last night, what a terrible tragedy, truly heartbreaking. It marched right along the cladding, that part was quite visible.

Horrible - reminds me of the Oakland Ghost Ship fire from last year. So many people losing their lives unnecessarily. We need to take fire protection/prevention laws more seriously.

I hope the families/people affected by this are coping as best as possible.
