No, it is not bad for the springs. Constantly unloading and reloading magazines will weaken them over time. How long is anyone's guess? If you do a real lot of shooting you may want to buy extra springs. But generally speaking you can get a reasonable amount of life out of your magazine springs.
To your second question: Maybe it's because they want to. As long as the guns are handled or stored safely it really is nobody's business.
Still, it might be a good idea to have an extra mag or two and rotate them once in a while. My nightstand gun (S&W 642) is also my carry gun so it is always with me, except for when I need to dress light and carry a small .380. Then I stash the .38 out of sight while I'm away from the house.
<<In America, one out of three homes with children has a gun, and nearly 1.7 million children live in a home with a loaded, unlocked gun. Every year thousands of kids are killed and injured as a result. The ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Campaign promotes a simple idea with the potential to help keep kids safe. It encourages parents to ask if there are unlocked guns in the homes where their children play>>

Oh absolutely! Magazines can be the "Achilles Heel" of a semi auto pistol. I usually have at least 4 for each semi auto that I own. It's also a good idea to test each one. I've had identical magazines where one didn't work. I've got a Sig P227 .45 that I bought a 14 round magazine for that never worked from the get go. I've got six 10 rounders that all work flawlessly. I also have an FNH .45 where one out of the four magazines only works intermittently. The rest work just fine. I've never had an issue with any of my HK's, Springfield's, CZ's or Glock's. 1911 magazines can be iffy as there are God only knows how many manufacturers that are making them. Wilson magazines seem to have a good reputation.
The S&W 642 enclosed hammer as with all J-frames are excellent little carry guns. There's no reason to leave home without one.

This reminds me, I was going to look through this thread because of a reply to one of your posts.
Instead of looking, I'm just going to ask you.
Did you say that keeping a magazine always filled does not wear out the spring? (My assumption based upon a reply I read a few days ago)
I have always rotated my critical defense ammo for my PPS between two magazines for fear of the spring getting weak and the magazine malfunctioning. I have done so on just my own assumption that a constantly compressed spring would lose its push strength.
Is this not the case? If so, what is this based on?
I'm asking due to my ignorance on this, not as a challenge to you.

I am the one who said it does weaken the spring. I have read that on gun forums.

Be careful what magazines you buy. I bought an off brand for my S&W and it did not work right. I also bought a new spring set and heel that increased capacity and it was junk.
I don't care who you are -- this can't be okay. We just can't say -- oh nothing we can do about that.
I don't know what gun owners want but I would love if they would offer positive ways to help make that statistic go away. It's obvious if I have a suggestion I don't know anything about gun ownership. I own that. I'm not trying to tell legal, law abiding, reasonable, sensible gun owners what to do....but I sure wish they and the NRA would try ot work towards reducing this stat.

That's all.
Find a way to get the government to enforce the gun laws that are already on the books. That would be a good start. And most of those "kids" are gang members between 15 and 19 and mostly black. Find a way to change the black gang culture, that should take a hundred years.

And my kids have grown up with guns, hunting, and learning to handle them safely. They know what a gun will do to a deer and they know that it's not a toy. Don't assume that an unlocked gun will kill.
