I hope you're joking.

If you're not, I could care less how much you think is "too much". Who made you the decider?

This morning while i was getting my oil changed, while i was in the waiting room it hit me: even something as simple/mundane as motor oil seems to have turned into a "nickel-n'-dime-em' for every dollar" type scam. According to many old timers/baby-boomers i've run into and talked to over the years, it used to be that motor oil allegedly lasted for 15,000+ miles in between oil changes in the past. It wouldn't surprise me at all if this was true, especially when you factor in how much worse greed has gotten over the years

From a greed/cronyism perspective, it makes more $en$e to create "short lasting" or "temporary" motor oil that is only good for 3k-5k miles before it needs replacing, due to more motor oil sales and profits, and of course more auto mechanic/auto shop profits. Old timers/baby-boomers seem to only confirm a lot of what has been discussed in this thread, things were much cheaper in the past and it's obvious.

well...

yes and no

oil has actually gotten better, though it is also a lot more expensive today...do places like jiffy-lube, etc want to have bunches of customers..yes

oil can last years and many miles, but it depends on the initial weight of the oil, and how its being used

older v-8 engines usually used 10-40 or 20-50, or depending on your preference and location (are you in a warm or a cold environment) could be just 40 weight or 50 weight

todays smaller engines run harder and use 5-30 or just 30

the heavier weights last longer, but are also very think in the cold states during winter

generally today the 3000 miles or 6000 miles for synthetic is a LOW conservative number..you can go closer to 5000/10000 but remember the more use..the more viscosity(lubrication worth) it has lost...so could you get 15k miles out of your oil...sure, but it is a risk

Interesting juxtaposition by OP.

When I took Econ 101 about 40 years ago, we were taught that, as long as demand curves are downward sloping, minimum wage laws hurt the low-wage workers whom the laws purportedly are intended to help. Demand curves are invariably downward sloping, save for some relatively unimportant exceptions ("Giffen's paradox").

This was shown in my econ 101 textbook with some basic algebra. Even one of the most popular econ textbooks of the time, authored by Paul Samuelson, who was considered as a liberal economist, contained this simple mathematical proof showing minimum wage laws to be deleterious.

Economic liberty. For years we have all read your posts where you complain you can't make it. That everything is unfair for you. From greedy landlords to greedy property owners.
People have given you solid advice, that you will instantly shoot down.
When will you look in the mirror and accept that it is you who is the problem and not society? You want everyone to adapt to you, but you refuse to adapt to your situation. Millions make it every day. The majority of us make it everyday. Why? Because we adapt and we work within the parameters of what is required.

Complete nonsense!

This would only happen in a monopoly, not in a competitive free market.

It would only take ONE manufacturer producing long lasting oil to break this "short lasting" scheme.

The fact is that the oil life has been steadily increasing with today's fully synthetic oil that can last much longer. If we follow your logic, why would oil manufacturers invent synthetic oil? It's more difficult to produce than the "short lasting" conventional oil.

Your view of the world is not based on facts and truth but your wild imagination. The fact and the truth of our life is that everything gets better under the control of the free market, and everything becomes crap when the government gets involved.

I don't know where those boomers came from, but when I had cars in the 60s and 70s oil lasted only 3-4,000 miles, spark plugs 10,000, cars 80,000. Now my oil is changed at 7500-10,000 miles when it tells me it's needed, spark plugs last 100,000 miles and cars go over 200,000. Oil is more expensive, I used to get it bulk at the gas station pumped into my container for about 20 cents a quart.

I have never made minimum wage, even my first job at age 14 in 1966 was about 25 cents (40% over minimum wage then). While in the last year of college and the first year of graduate school I made $3, and minimum was $1.60, and it was because I had experience.
