This is the CBS affliiate out of Central Nebraska which is extremely Republican.
Seems like more and more the media here in Nebraska is having stories like this about that are basically very much against the appeal of Obamacare, in favor of Trumpcare.
Then there have many editorials in the Omaha World Herald that discourage Medicaid cuts.
Medicaid has become an extremely important part of life for millions of people of all ages.
Young parents with a child who has a serious chronic illness depend on it to keep the child alive and healthy.
Working adults who cannot find full-time employment anywhere, but are working several part-time jobs to maintain their family's income depend on it.
Older workers who have lost all their former company health plans, or have topped them out with an illness, count on it.
Workers who have lost their old jobs forever count on it.
Single parents count on it, especially young single mothers. And all the grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.
Retirees count on it.
The aged count on it. The retirement homes and all the other services the old folks depend on count on it too.
Hospitals, especially those with active emergency centers, count on it.
All the states with low population, low-paying jobs, stagnant economies locally, and chronic under-employment all count on Medicaid the most.
Those who are middle income count on it as much as the poor now. Those who are struggling upward, into the middle class in suburbia, are some who count on it the most.
Affordable health care is now seen as a right for all. Medicaid is especially depended upon by cities, counties, states and regions all over the nation now, and after 17 years of it's availability, suddenly removing it is going to throw the nation's economy into deep and long-standing turmoil.
The real problem Congress faces is to make our present health care system more equitable for all, not removing it. Replacing what is there now is next to impossible because it is so depended upon by so many, but there are a lot of ways to make it more equitable and still keep it going.
Those solutions are a lot harder and demand some very careful planning. They will also require a major shift in our national priorities and the way we all think about our health, but the foundational elements of Medicaid are sound enough. That's obvious, because millions of Americans use it every day.
The party that is able to accomplish the improvements that are obviously needed is going to be hard to beat politically for years to come, and revising a present law is always easier, faster, and more smoothly accomplished than attempting to start all over again from scratch.
I don't feel sorry for any of them. They can all do what my MIL does: go to their preferred country club (aka church) and "pray for healing". They'd better save that tithe because Medicare is next.
The Republican party has always targeted Medicare and Medicaid, as well as Social Security. The party has never made a secret of it. Those programs have been on the hit list almost since they were established.
Obviously, this is not because the rank and file in general want these programs crushed, but because the big donor class wants them crushed. The Republican party takes it's marching orders from the big donors.
I have a lot of Republican friends in my age group which depend on these programs, some benefit greatly. It seems like they willfully ignored the party's policies. I can't see how they could not have known ...
Anyway, the fact that news organizations are covering these cases is because it is of human interest, real stories about real people. There is no 'turning against' anything, they are just reporting the stories. What might be different is that special interests are not able to suppress the stories at this time.
