Can you explain what you mean by this, and also who is advocating for it?

Regardless of what anyone thinks there is no settled science and what was done in the past to help deal with unsolvable mental issues for a few unfortunates. It was never meant to be a common thing that was seen as perfectly normal leading to changing laws and social mores and leading to kids forever altering the course of their lives and being stuck taking meds forever.
What if medication is part of the treatment? I'm confused by your words. Of course science changes all the time. What you might take for high blood pressure now could be a pill that is proven unsafe for other reasons later on. I don't see how that's a reason to stop the practice of helping trans kids in any way that we can. A hundred years ago, they likely would have just been called some kind of derogatory term for homosexuals, forced to stay in the wrong body, and shamed into a heterosexual marriage, if one at all.
