True. So why have these flags and statues been allowed to exist for so long? If we are one united country (and I'm not so sure that we are) why do they need their own flag? And statues of their defeated general?
I'm so used to seeing the confederate flag and have known so many southerners that I just took it to be something sentimental to them, not a flag of another country. But when you think about it, there's a good argument to be made for getting rid of the statues and the flags. (I try to see both sides...)
Most people that fly the flag do it to represent the south and are ignorant to the true history of it IMO. But my original posts question remains.
You're the one demanding the removal of memorials and deriding residents of the South, I kinda think that you're the one who needs to do the explaining since you were the one talking about glorifying losing.
<>And...the South lost. Most southerners got over it!
And the United States lost the War of 1812, or have you forgotten a little matter of having the White House burned? We all got over that and made Jackson a hero because he won one battle. Lee won a lot of battles, but eventually ran out of men and bullets.
The Light Brigade is held up as a heroic battle, but they were all killed. Many losers have been renowned for their bravery throughout history.
One of those lessons being rejected now is that you can lose and still be well regarded, or even heroic in the effort. That's sad.
They lost the civil war to the north. So they should really not even have the right to have these statues or their flags. And why are they even celebrating the fact that they Lost? It would be like the losing football team flying their school flag around the football field after a loss. Hey everyone, let's celebrate and draw attention to being losers!
Should we blow up the Crazy Horse memorial? Smash the Sitting Bull memorial? Tear down the Pancho Villa statues? The Benito Juarez statue in Chicago too. They all lost. No reason their names should be on anything in our country unless it's an apology right?
Might as well add Malcolm X's statue in NYC & any schools, parks or boulevards named after him since he was an avowed racist. Martin Luther King Jr. was a homophobe, tear all his stuff down too.
And they weren't even constructed until decades later, mostly to scare black people and say "hey, this is a reminder that we don't give a **** that you're now free."
Pretty sure that's not why they were erected, lol. In many cases they were erected because the victors were far less hateful than the modern branch of the extreme left. They wanted reconciliation with the South. They understood they had to let the people have their pride if they ever expected to move beyond the Civil War.
<>As a result of the generosity and attempts to heal the wounds, 150 years laters, the descendants of these traitors are still waving their ridiculous Confederate flags and keeping company with Nazis.<>
I had written a nice long post trying to explain why this is not the way it is. Pointless. You guys get to run the country from now on. Good luck with the polarized perceptions.
