As the Democratic party looks toward the 2020 presidential election, there are questions about who will take over the mantle of spokesperson and future leader of the party. There are questions about whether or not Sanders, an Independent senator from Vermont, will make another run at the Democratic nomination. There are questions about whether the Democratic Party is quickly becoming a regional party. Less than a year into President Trump’s chaotic tenure, there are no clear answers to those questions. What is certain, however, is that the future of the Democratic Party appears to be female.

Rising stars Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) seem to have the rare ability to unite the party and excite the various factions making up the base. While the senators originate from very different sections of the country, their paths to elected office are extremely similar. Both women began their careers as attorneys prior to landing in the U.S. Senate. Both women have publicly endorsed a single-payer health-care system. Harris recently said, “It’s not only about what’s morally and ethically right. It also just makes sense from a fiscal standpoint or a return on investment for taxpayers.”

Support from President Obama and fellow women senators like Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) have only increased the national profile of Harris, who served six years as the attorney general of California before winning a seat in Congress in 2016. Often compared to Obama as a result of her mixed-race upbringing, Harris has not been shy about tackling issues relating to income inequality, racial justice and health security.

Both Harris and Gillibrand hold no punches and have been criticized for exhibiting the same political aspirations as many of their male counterparts. Harris has been no stranger to addressing controversy head-on. She began her first year in Washington by addressing the Women’s March, challenging Attorney General Jeff Sessions in an open Senate hearing and taking President Trump to task for his response to the events in Charlottesville, Va. As the polls closed on election night last November, Harris told a rowdy California crowd that she intends “to fight.” Less than a year into her first term, Harris has stayed true to her words.

thoughts? Personally I think this is a great way to make sure Trump wins even bigger next time. Also, why are liberals so desperate to have a woman president over anything else it seems? Do they have daddy issues or something?

Well if that's all they have, I guess they are going to lose again.

that's why I said The Hill ARTICLE. Guess you were so shocked at the idea that Democrats would put forward such a bad ticket that that is all you could comment on

and again, it's NOT an article. It's an opinion piece. They are different things.

And I'm not bothering to comment on the idea of that ticket because it's 2017. After the midterms will be plenty of time to start thinking more seriously about 2020.

Hillary 2.0 from New York and an SF radical who goes easy on cop killers. Sounds about right for a Dem ticket.

Will also really help them get back the white and culturally conservative midwest...oh wait....no it won't.

I can't wait to watch their heads explode when the lose by the same electoral margin, and this time lose the popular vote due to 4 years of reducing illegals and scaring them into staying home. Wonder if Harris will go on TV and encourage them to vote.

Why are Cons so desperate to nominate and elect celebrities? Are Cons star struck by celebrities?

I assume you mean Reagan and Trump. The former who won two landslide elections and the latter winning states no Republican won in 20 years

and I assume you think Harris/Gillibrand is a good ticket? Excellent. Trump is winning about 40 states next time

Name recognition. It works when people know who you are. Some forth string candidate has their work cut out for them when they go up against a name recognized.
