Berkeley mayor Jesse Arreguin is calling for “Antifa” — the so-called “anti-fascist” group that proudly uses violence to silence views with which it does not agree — to be classified as a street gang by police.
Arreguin’s comments came after hundreds of Antifa activists jumped police barricades on Sunday and assaulted right-wing protesters, injuring five. National media generally reported that Antifa had initiated the violence.
CBS San Francisco reported:
“I think we should classify them as a gang,” said Arreguin. “They come dressed in uniforms. They have weapons, almost like a militia and I think we need to think about that in terms of our law enforcement approach.”
Arreguin said that while he does not support the far right, it was time to draw the line on the left as well, especially on the black-clad activists who showed up in force and took over both the protests and the park, and played a part in Sunday’s violent clashes.
I respect this man. Hopefully more Democrats follow suit
Pelosi called out them as What they did was wrong in Berkely.
Never cared much for her politic ways, but nice to see ber speak out against their violence.
Sounds like political suicide with his constituents.
I think that is exactly what he's trying to avoid. He sees the growing outrage toward Antifa, which he was using as his personal goon squad, and now it backfired.
He's being a political hack and a hypocrite to keep his job. When WAPO comes out and calls them violent thugs, you know the pendulum has swung.

Possibly because both the citizens and businesses have been complaining over the repeated violence and property destruction caused by them. This past violent protest was the 5th one this year alone and each time the police took a "hands off" approach and defended their actions saying they didn't want to escalate the violence.
Has there ever been wide support for antifa? Most people I know have been sick of them for years.
