looks like the issue stems from MINNESOTA highschool students bringing confederate flags to school, so the school banned all flags. And the students are trying to protest a mess they created themselves.

They've already gone after the American flag in public schools. A public school in California banned the wearing of the American flag because it was "offensive" to minorities and might promote violence.

What was the problem with them having Confederate flags? Seriously, it amazes me that anyone can find a piece of cloth offensive and still consider themselves a rational human being. Same with statues, for that matter.

As a parent, I've had to fight with school administrators over my children expressing themselves. Not in any way that a reasonable person would consider it offensive, either. My daughter wanted to write a story with a main character who was a Goth girl - which in her mind means someone who wears black. Imagine my surprise when the teacher told her that "Goth" was inappropriate for school. Needless to say, the teacher was even more surprised when I showed up to discuss the issue. Yes, the story was written, but the point is that nothing about the word "Goth", or about the Goth culture for that matter, should be considered inappropriate for creative writing.

Overall, allowing schools to ban flags is just a part of a much larger problem: Schools are being allowed to dictate what is or isn't appropriate for our children to say or think. That is not their job.

I wish I still had the note that was sent home by my daughter's teacher a couple years ago because when asked what she did over the weekend my daughter answered "We went to the gun range and I shot a rifle." You would have thought that we had spent a wonderful family weekend strangling puppies and drowning cats. This teacher seriously went full on Social Justice Warrior on me. Again, she was ultimately surprised when I showed up to discuss the note in person.

you're going to be obtuse on the entire issue. We can end the discussion here. I'm sure those Minnesota kids were displaying their southern pride. But yeah, my other post explains how I feel about the whole thing.

Life goes on. I have no problem with the American flags on the trucks.

Why are you leaving out the rest of the story? The school in California banned students from wearing American flag gear on Cinco De Mayo since they were only doing it to intentionally cause conflicts with Latino students.

The main job of a school is to create a safe environment conducive to learning. Banning asshats from using flags to intentionally create conflicts makes perfect sense.

School officials are good at over reacting. They probably wrongly thought they had to ban everything to ban anything.

The school will discover that is correct. If flags are allowed to be displayed on vehicles in the parking lot, they must allow the display of any flag. Otherwise they are engaging in unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination. All it will take is one person to sue when their Nazi or Isis flag is banned and all flags will be banned again. When it comes to the 1st Amendment it really is an all or nothing affair.

The US Flag should be allowed to be displayed anywhere in the US at any time - period. Full stop.
