By bringing these claims in the county courts in San Francisco and Alameda, the cities’ attorneys are setting them on a legal course where the justices of the California Supreme Court—a reliably liberal court—would ultimately decide the financial liability of the oil companies.
One immediate step the oil companies could take is to remove these lawsuits to federal court. They could invoke a federal district court’s “diversity jurisdiction” under 28 U.S.C. § 1332 because the plaintiffs are from different states or nations than all of the defendants and the amount being sued for exceeds $75,000.
Such a move would take any appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit where critics would fear the chances of a leftwing outcome, but would also preserve the option that the final word on this case would ultimately come from the U.S. Supreme Court instead of the California Supreme Court.
They are referring to the effects of global warming as a public nuisance.
They are requesting that the five oil companies pay for a sea wall, raise low lying buildings and property, and pay for other infrastructure.
Pull their gas.... just cut off all gas sales... for three days at first.
How many of them bought gas from these places?
Unbelievable... except that it's California. That makes it believable.
Maybe those people should get out of their cars then. I can't take this seriously when the traffic is congested constantly in that area, let alone many other areas of CA. Want anyone to believe you actually care and it's not some political stunt? Get out of your cars, yes even your hybrids because they are actually worse right now than gas powered cars, and walk. Or take your bicycle.

Until I see that, they're hypocrites.
A lot of people in SF do exactly what you say. I'm one of them. I take public transit or bike to work every day. I walk everywhere or take public transit.
I have a car (which is over a decade old now...if it works, why replace it?) but use it very infrequently. I'm not abnormal in the Bay Area. In fact, many people I know don't even own a car.
Then again, we could certainly do a lot better. We still do have a lot of cars on the road, as you rightly point out. Most of those cars are being driven often by people that don't live in SF - so this is more of a regional problem than one that is specific to the City of SF.
For what it is worth, I find this lawsuit to be a bit ridiculous.
While there may or may not be some justification for a lawsuit, I do not believe it is the place of city attorneys to pursue this. This is a justification for wasteful spending.
The seawall is 100 years old and needs rebuilding to the tune of $3-5 billion dollars ( in today's dollars).
But it's going to take 4-5 years to do the environmental study and cost will probably go up..as high at $10 billion.
They are about to vote on a $350 million bond to finance the initial proposals and environmental studies.

And not the oil companies problem

So oil companies should be free of the consequences of their actions and face no repercussions for lying to the American people for decades?

It's tobacco all over again.
Can you prove damages?
