I guarantee you that at least 99% of them would happily give up Columbus day for the Friday after Thanksgiving. As would at least 99% of all American workers.
Very few people actually care about Columbus at all. All this brouhaha about how we're losing our history and heritage is so much balderdash by a bunch of chicken littles.
Not likely to happen because that creates a 4 day weekend. It's an issue for some businesses to be closed that long. I don't think the USPS would be allowed 4 days in a row with no mail delivery and i think it's actually illegal for banks to be closed 4 days in a row.
Then they'll do whatever they do now for 3-day weekends to cover vital services.
It's not a law that businesses must observe federal holidays, and very few observe all of them. How many businesses do you know that close for Columbus day? But a lot of non-retail businesses already run a skeleton staff on the Friday after Thanksgiving, as do a lot of government offices. Because people who have sick or vacation or personal leave days coming will use them.
Even most banks don't observe banker's hours anymore.
