SEATTLE -- The Seattle City Council next week will consider a resolution to change the name of Columbus to "Indigenous People's Day."

Native American tribes have been pushing for the change for years and successfully persuaded the Minneapolis City Council to make the change earlier this year. It was a unanimous vote.

The native groups argue that Columbus Day has been celebrated as the beginning of European domination of the Americas.

"By changing it to Indigenous People's Day is saying that you see that we have rights and you're offering you respect to work with us on a government to government level as equals," Lummi Tribal member George Jameson said Friday.

Council Members Bruce Harrell and Kshama Sawant introduced the resolution, which is on the agenda for discussion Tuesday.

Instead of giving them a day, how about giving them all of their land back? Harrell and Sawant, sign over the deed to your condo or house. Now that would be impressive.

That isn't too far off from the truth. 36 acres of waterfront property in Kitsap County will soon be reverted back to the Suquamish. The land was leased out for non-Indian use, resulting in about 80 subdivided lots.

I'm surprised it took this long. The celebration of Columbus and his discoveries became politically incorrect years ago. Where I worked in CA back in the 1980s we used to get Columbus Day off, but the holiday was "traded" to get a day off for far worker labor organizer Cesar Chavez's Birthday.

Columbus Day doesn't make sense for the northwest. That is so.........New York.

David Thompson day. We need a holiday at the end of April.

Or a day celebrating the Lewis and Clark expedition. For a bunch of tourists writing a guidebook to the Northwest they sure changed the country as much as Columbus.

Well, even in Mexico it is still called Columbus Day, but many indigenous "celebrate" by desecrating a large statue of him in the la reforma (Popular street in Mexico City) by throwing tomatoes at it. I am okay with keeping it as Columbus day because in a way (for the educatef) it serves as a yearly reminder of the atrocity caused by some of our ancestors. On the other hand i think changing the name ould serve as a reminder that indigenous culures are still alive.

I like the idea. Very Seattlelike. But what about Chief Joseph? I'd like it even more if the State of Washington would publicly acknowledge the greatness of Chief Joseph as well as how horrible he was treated. Burying him way out in the middle of some God forsaken desert when all he wanted was to be buried next to his Father. Read up on that. That would be step one I would think. But this is Seattle, so really that has nothing to do with Seattle.

August 9 has been International Indigenous Peoples' Day for decades. Why isn't that celebrated in the US?

How far back do you have to go to be indigenous? How many waves of immigration ago?
