That's a really interesting video. Never knew that not only did they work to make all the Confederate monuments but also actively pushed for changing of school textbooks to be more pro-Southern. Were most of these women just horrible racists?
They’re harmless. Just another group that promotes Southern Lost Cause Mythology. As the years go by, they’ll become more meaningless than they already are.
You’ve gotta remember that when they were created, they never could’ve dreamed that Jim Crow in the South would go the way of the Stegosaurus. It’s THAT old of an organization.
So in 2017, they couldn’t possibly be less irrelevant than they already are. But perhaps they can help maintain monuments and give out scholarships. Harmless stuff.
Someone in one of my genealogy groups just posted about completing her application to join the group.
It's not about racism. It's not about losing the war. It's about honoring her past relatives. That doesn't mean she had to agree with every decision they made, but they were her relatives.
Another person (Southern) told me that after the War most of the men in her family were killed and they never even knew where--or if--they'd been buried. So the town erected a Civil War monument to one of the leaders and it became almost like a memorial site, where they could go to remember their own relatives, as they had no where else to go.
