California has been the poorest state in the nation under the vastly more sophisticated “supplemental” poverty measure since the alternative statistic was created (Mississippi is poorest under the old measure). It’s not even really that close: Florida has the second highest rate, at 18.7 percent.

California cost of living depends on family size.

If someone is single or has a roommate in a studio apartment it is only slightly more than other places.

If someone wants to buy a house or rent a house in a populated area with mild weather near the coast and has a large family it is extremely, extremely expensive.

The most affordable grocery stores I have seen are in California. Lots of discount stores also with lots of big bargains.

There are affordable areas in California with Midwestern and Southern cost of living before the sky-high taxes but they tend to be in areas that have extremely hot summers so the utilities are extremely high.

States with very high cost of living tend to not be much more if one is single or DINK couple.

Spent part of August in Oakland on business and the homeless are EVERYWHERE under every overpass. Unbelievable really.

I was at the downtown Hilton and they had to keep the front doors locked to keep the homeless from coming in setting up in hallways.

So pathetic.
