Exactly! At least as Stewart Smally his lame speech could be taken seriously. But as himself... not so much...

Tony it should be fine, the seat can be filled by Governor will appoint someone who can fill the seat within days...

in short there is no chance of this impacting Dems voting power short term. longer term it means the seat now up in nov 2018 and it is a purple state..

Hmm. Maybe the Republicans would have gained an advantage in capturing the Senate seat in November 2018 if Mr. Franken had stayed in office. Perhaps that is why the Democrats were so intent on Mr. Franken departing.

I was making the point that followed here.

Get our old guys to resign, the seats are relatively safe in an emergency election or a Governor's decision on a replacement and now the Democrats can claim moral supremacy over the Republicans trying to save an Alabama seat in that special election or the President staying tough and refusing to resign himself.

It's a blow to the Democrat party. No question about it.

The Democrat Party will be loath that Al Franken's speech will be used as campaign fodder in 2018. We was afterall, a very visible symbol of their presence in the US Senate.

He was also, mentioned as a possible 2020 Presidential candidate. That is now gone too.

Not for nothing, but Franken didn't resign yet.

He just announced his intention to resign.

In a "couple weeks".

Franken's term did not expire until 2020.

That's what Trump and Moore are doing... so far nothing substantive.

Just because Franken is choosing to commit political suicide, doesn't mean others have to...
