"A presence on the moon...to provide for our common defense."

- V.P. Pence

If they truly want to "expand the horizons of human knowledge", I applaud them. If it's something else then here we go again.

This calls for a link. Nobody is that stupid. And yes, I've read Heinlein.

if that's trump, why the pence quote?

Quote:
At a time when China is working on an ambitious lunar program, President Donald Trump vowed on Monday that the United States will remain the leader in space exploration as he began a process to return Americans to the moon.

Going by way of the Moon (again) will delay, not accelerate, any further ventures into the solar system. It's a really bad idea.

not true. it is easier to launch spacecraft from the moon than it is from the earth. thus it would save fuel, and allow for heavier loads in the spacecraft, which means more supplies necessary to go to mars.

I'm not arguing one way or the other because this is so far out of my area of expertise. But don't you still have to get that "heavier load" to the moon in the first place?

If he was referring to military defense, we already tried that. It was called Project Horizon.

We would also be in violation of the 1967 Outer space Treaty which states that “nations are prohibited from placing nuclear arms or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit, on the Moon, or on other bodies in space. Nations cannot claim sovereignty over the Moon or other celestial bodies. Nations are responsible for their activities in space, are liable for any damage caused by objects launched into space from their territory, and are bound to assist astronauts in distress. Their space installations and vehicles shall be open, on a reciprocal basis, to representatives of other countries, and all parties agree to conduct outer-space activities openly and in accordance with international law.”

Yes, however the Moon is rich with Helium-3 which is an energy source. If we had a sufficient supply chain on the Moon to manufacture rockets there (we’re nowhere near this and certainly not in our lifetimes) we could launch from there at a fraction of the cost.

Right now, it would be much more cost effective to launch from Earth.
