Alabama sends message: We are too broke to care about right and wrong | AL.com

The only problem is that this is the same state that mandated an ID for voting. Basically, it is only a matter of time before the DOJ puts the royal smackdown on AL. And here I thought it was those stinky blue states like Commiefornia and NY that were bad at finances....

Sounds like they are well run fiscally if they are shutting down offices because they can't afford them. I wish our Feds would do that.

Ah yes, run so fiscally well that they make it a huge PITA to do a simple thing like get a driver's license that will make it much more difficult for people to vote as well.

No, no. See, when a red-state fails at basic finance, it is some how "Obama's" fault, not the fault of the right-wing screwballs that have ruled the state for decades (technically since Reconstruction ended, but who's counting?) Similarly, when a "dirty blue" state is economically successful, you have to give credit to Trump because all good things come from him, much like God, but with a better tan and more women.

Seriously, I agree with you, and basic economics bears this fact out. The red states are universally mired in poverty compared to the blue ones, with worse health, lower life expectancy, and worse education. They are also in almost all cases net takers from the federal government vs. net givers (which blue states almost always are), which makes right-wingers whining about "dirty welfare bums" hilariously hypocritical since their mismanaged states - laughable crosses between theocracies and oligarchies - ARE the "welfare bums."

Friends don't let friends turn their state into Alabama.

Most of the offices closed were small satellite offices or offices in very low populated areas. It doesn't make sense to keep an office open when you can go days without a single person coming in to renew their license. The one in my town was in the list of possible closures, but it ended up staying open. It's no different than the USPS closing rural post offices, it's for the same reasons.

As far as the racial aspect of it, those majority black counties have largely been abandoned and are mostly farms and timberland these days.

AL is shutting down 45 of 49 offices, not TWO offices where 75% of voters are black.
