How convenient to selectively close the offices in black areas. That should make someone happy.
Listed in descending order of population, the top ten blackest AL counties are:
4.Montgomery County- 226,349 56%
31.Dallas County - 40,008 69%
50.Macon County - 18,963 81%
54.Hale County - 14,952 57%
59.Sumter County - 13,040 73%
62.Wilcox County - 10,986 71%
64.Bullock County - 10,362 69%
65.Lowndes County - 10,358 73%
66.Perry County - 9,574 67%
67.Greene County - 8,422 80%
Montgomery Co. and Dallas Co. will keep their DMV offices.
That leaves...
50.Macon County - 18,963 81%
54.Hale County - 14,952 57%
59.Sumter County - 13,040 73%
62.Wilcox County - 10,986 71%
64.Bullock County - 10,362 69%
65.Lowndes County - 10,358 73%
66.Perry County - 9,574 67%
67.Greene County - 8,422 80%
The last four are no-brainers based on the sparse population.
Closing Hale Co. is whiter than staying open Dallas Co.
That leaves Sumter and Wilcox Cos.
If you are in Sumter Co. you go to Meridian, AL or Greensborough, AL.
Both cities have a DMV.
Wilcox Co. is literally surrounded by DMVs.
It would be ridiculous to put another one in the center.
Most of the offices closed were small satellite offices or offices in very low populated areas. It doesn't make sense to keep an office open when you can go days without a single person coming in to renew their license. The one in my town was in the list of possible closures, but it ended up staying open. It's no different than the USPS closing rural post offices, it's for the same reasons.
As far as the racial aspect of it, those majority black counties have largely been abandoned and are mostly farms and timberland these days.
Whoa now SNL, don't you go trying to inject clarity into this thread. Can't you see it was started in the hopes of having an insane racially-charged discussion leading to nothing but mean spirited bickering and name calling. And here you go, doing research and trying to drop a common-sense post out in the middle of this OP's race-baiting masterpiece. Shame on you!!!!

.
Yea, thats not even close to true. We had an entire thread on this 2 years ago when they closed them.
And like you , I am an Alabama resident.
These offices are indeed in rural areas, but that has nothing to do with usage in and of itself. I remember being a kid and it being an excused day off to go get your license because we only had 1 fully functional DMV in a county of 140,000 people. It was entirely possible to go to the DMV and not even be seen that day.
Baldwin County is by every definition rural, but that didnt make the DMVs in Bay Minette, Fairhope or Foley any less packed.
In counties with only 1 office, im sure that is even worse.

None of those counties have a population of 0, so "abandoned" isnt true. Im not sure why you are trying so hard to defend the closure of DMVs that service at the low end; 20,000 people. (the smallest serving DMV served 2 counties with a total population of that)
No, no. See, when a red-state fails at basic finance, it is some how "Obama's" fault, not the fault of the right-wing screwballs that have ruled the state for decades (technically since Reconstruction ended, but who's counting?) Similarly, when a "dirty blue" state is economically successful, you have to give credit to Trump because all good things come from him, much like God, but with a better tan and more women.
Seriously, I agree with you, and basic economics bears this fact out. The red states are universally mired in poverty compared to the blue ones, with worse health, lower life expectancy, and worse education. They are also in almost all cases net takers from the federal government vs. net givers (which blue states almost always are), which makes right-wingers whining about "dirty welfare bums" hilariously hypocritical since their mismanaged states - laughable crosses between theocracies and oligarchies - ARE the "welfare bums."
Friends don't let friends turn their state into Alabama.

Careful facts are like poison to the progressives.

Hale, Michigan as a matter of fact.
The nearest secretary of state office is in East Tawas.
That's 29.8 miles each way.
Might be longer if they didn't stop building when they got to the lake.
Not really seeing the problem.
you are trying to make the anecdotal argument of "i dont have a problem with it". Its not that hard to see the flaw. You shouldn't have to travel 100 miles to get to a DMV.
Considering how the DMV is set up, it would have made since to at least have one in every county seat.
I live in Maryland's smallest in size County and our satellite MVA office is open 3 days a week and isn't full service, mostly it's tags, title and hearings.
The four closest full service offices are in Prince George's County at 25 miles (45 minutes), Anne Arundel at 30 miles (usually takes 55 minutes), Charles County at 40 miles (an hour) and St. Mary's at 50 miles (an hour). Before any of you say "But Google Maps says.......", it doesn't take into account traffic or no direct routes.
While Maryland doesn't technically require an state issued ID for voting it does in order to buy alcohol and cigarettes.
