But you couldn't really explain it to people from there because they hadn't really been out of the State.

I think California thought Marijuana was going to get them out of it but I half suspect that is why Sessions came out and threw a wrench in their plans by casting doubt on legal use. That could really put a crimp in the revenues.

I would always bet on California though for the weather.

I'm not Californian but I still dream of living there. I've never been to LA but I have vacationed in San Diego. The taxes were expensive but I loved it.

Housing costs are crazy, but my house is paid off, so it doesn't bother me at all. Taxes are high, but you make more money here so it's a wash. Traffic is a mess, but I work for myself and can choose when to be on the freeways. We have a TON of Mexican folks here (legal & illegal) and I have found the vast majority of them to be the nicest people you would care to meet. We have gangs, but I don't go to those neighborhoods. We have a TON of homeless people, but I just drive by them. If you live up in the hills, you might get fires & floods, but I don't live up in the hills. What we DON'T have are hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, humidity, snow, icy roads, rotting cars, rain (though I kinda like rain) and BUGS. I haven't seen as much as a mosquito in 45 years. And here's the best part, at least for me. Last Saturday, in JANUARY, I spent the day sailing my boat off the coast in 80 degree weather. You just can't beat that.

Why are you doing this to me?
No one likes a bragger you know half kidding.

How come no one ever starts threads here about those five states like we continually see about California?

Is California-bashing a meme or something?
Not sure. They're probably envious of Californians. I know I am.
Also maybe I do enough bashing of Maryland for everyone *shrugs*

What got my attention in this video, as a retired ceramic tile contractor here in Ohio, is that in California a permit is required just to re-tile your bathroom! Now, when we lived in California, we did a lot of work in our house ourselves (I had experience working in construction with my brothers-in-law), including installing tile in both bathrooms, and installing some laminate flooring in the kitchen. I suppose today we would have been require to get a permit! At the time we did it, a permit wasn't required, and here in Ohio, we did tile work for 20 years, building walk in showers, tub surrounds, counter tops, floors, and wall tile. No permits were required (and we did some of this for a local home improvement store as their installer, so I know it wasn't required by law).

Imagine a homeowner wanting to do something as simple as re-tiling a bathroom, and having to get a permit to do it! Insane!
The only permit required is if you are replacing the shower/tub enclosure. You can replace flooring or tile any other surface without a permit.

Here are the permit requirements for the City of Fremont: https://fremont.gov/documentcenter/view/21214

I bought a house once with a recent bathroom remodel only to discover a few years later that the homeowner had tiled the tub surround over regular sheetrock.

No you can't Mike. It would take you 2 hours to drive that strip of pch in bumper to bumper traffic

1970? In 1970 you could buy a Honda Coupe for $1444

The problem is that wages haven't gone up as much as prices, and that's because the wealth of this Country has been diverted to multinational corporations and the top 1% That's where the blame lies, not with any particular state.

Man, I really must be missing out on the CA experience. No bars on my windows, no bars on those of my friends.

On bad neighborhoods? Sure. But that goes for bad neighborhoods in Alabama as well, so from where I'm sitting - having grown up in Northern Europe - window bars are more of a US thing.

Everybody is leaving, it's too crowded? Seems like there's a hole in the logic.

Well, that's fine, but median is median, half are more expensive, half are cheaper. But your 40-60k is so much lower than that. Makes me question "beauty" or location. Out in the sticks typically does not work for many.

What's funny is when you exclude Kentucky, the rest are blue states.
