California is the poorest state in the Union. You won't hear that in the "mainstream" media, but when you look at the "red ink" compared to the black, it's true.

High taxes, excess regulation, high energy costs, are taking their toll.

What got my attention in this video, as a retired ceramic tile contractor here in Ohio, is that in California a permit is required just to re-tile your bathroom! Now, when we lived in California, we did a lot of work in our house ourselves (I had experience working in construction with my brothers-in-law), including installing tile in both bathrooms, and installing some laminate flooring in the kitchen. I suppose today we would have been require to get a permit! At the time we did it, a permit wasn't required, and here in Ohio, we did tile work for 20 years, building walk in showers, tub surrounds, counter tops, floors, and wall tile. No permits were required (and we did some of this for a local home improvement store as their installer, so I know it wasn't required by law).

Imagine a homeowner wanting to do something as simple as re-tiling a bathroom, and having to get a permit to do it! Insane!

One thing I have seen with such requirements is that this increases the value of the property, thus the real property tax (which obviously CA needs) and the downside being when people figure this out, they either go about it illegally or don't bother improving the properties at all or even attempting to keep them up if it adds to the tax bill. Permits can be very expensive also.

CA is spiraling down. There is nothing anyone outside the state and little the minority in the state can do to stop it. I don't know where it will all end. Flushing out the illegal aliens would go a long way in reducing the poverty, but illegal aliens are building the state for the wealthy. Interesting to watch the rise and fall of CA though.

A nationwide right to work law would help, or a ban on collective bargaining for public sector unions.

If the SCOTUS strikes down mandatory fees to unions that would do a lot to help California as it would castrate the public unions who are ruining the state.

Also overturning Citizen's United would mean that union contributions to political candidates could be restricted by law.

Mississippi is the poorest, and you won't hear that in Breitbart.

California's incomes aren't the problem. It's the taxes and prices. A $250,000 income don't mean squat if a gallon of gas costs $15, a starter 2br/1bath shack/house costs $2Mil and, your taxes go directly to illegal immigrant welfare.

Funny, we backed out of a real estate deal here in Teaparty-utopia WI because the homeowner had done work without a permit. Sucks to be him. Now it's public record. He's still sitting on an overpriced house that no one will touch. All to save a few bucks and thumb his nose at the government.

Sure there are certain improvements/changes that need a permit. But tiling your bathroom ?
CA has gone a bit overboard in their quest for new revenue streams.

None of these things are even remotely close to the truth. Carry on...

I wouldn't worry your little heads about California. People I know that live there aren't worried.

It's going to be okay.

I admire your concern for your fellow citizens of the USA. That is compassion and caring.

States do not ask for permits, the cities do, and some cities across the nation require permits for pretty much everything, while other cities are not too concerned (even within the same county the requirements can be very different). Some cities in Florida require permits for everything, but people don't bother with them for something like re-tiling bathrooms.
