And I began writing and speaking about why doctors die by suicide and why it's so often hushed up.
The response was huge: So many distressed doctors (and medical students) wrote and phoned me. Soon I was running a de facto international suicide hotline from my home. To date, I've spoken to thousands of suicidal doctors; published a book of their suicide letters; attended more funerals; interviewed hundreds of surviving physicians, families and friends. I've spent nearly every waking moment over the past five years on a personal quest for the truth of "why." Guilt, bullying, exhaustion are big factors.
The doctor at our local VA clinic killed himself a few years ago. Don't know why. Only knew it was a suicide because my sister was the RN there. I know they were overworked. There was the two of them and a receptionist for over 3,000 patients.

All the more reason to curb our population growth. I know the whole healthcare industry is stretched to the limit with patients, long hours, etc.
Doctors work long hours. They don't get a lot o sleep coupled with high stress, which leads to many problems. You can blame hospitals who want to reduce their cost by hiring the least amount of doctors and nurses. The politicians should implement a new law that places limits on the number of hours a nurse or doctor can work.

That law should be modify to limit the maximum hours to 40 hours per week and a maximum of 12 hours per day. That would force hospitals to hire more doctors and give doctors similar hours compared to the average working person.
An education for all of us, it seems. I wasn't aware this was a problem either.
Almost all doctors now work for healthcare systems (corporations) that they must answer to. If they're not moving fast enough or meeting their goal for billing, they have to answer to the corporate powers that be. And sometimes punitive action is taken. It's not like the old days when the doctors were revered. Now they're just a cog in a very large wheel and are under tremendous pressure trying to balance patient care with the bottom line.

Cush!
When I was in medical training in the '70's I might have to work 40 hours in one day!
Grew up with one for a while. He worked insane hours, and also had a lot of effort to maintain his specialization. It was nuts. But I also know that many of them pick suicide over dealing with some health problems too. Bottom line is....being a Dr sucks.
