That's what first came to mind. Men typically do the more dangerous work during a crisis/disaster/etc.

LOL I'm sorry but did you really post that women need to take care of men when they return. Why do we need to take care of men. This mentality of men is why women have been suppressed. You need to give women more credit. They aren't the weaklings anymore.
Hugely complex issue. Some points already addressed here.
One consideration is that due to the rigors of childbirth, women have been genetically selected that have higher resistance to disease, infection etc. not to mention a higher average fat content which would explain at least some of the Irish famine numbers in the article.
Basically, this is a hugely complex issue that some website hungry for clicks plopped a sexy title on. *shrug*
