Interesting read!

Quote:
The United States has been a net importer of steel for six decades. It imported more than 20 percent of steel through much of the 1980s, and imports of finished steel today remain in that ballpark, about 25 percent of the market. Imports in 2017, 29.1 billion metric tons, were nearly identical to 2011’s 30.5 billion.

What has changed is that Americans consume far less steel — little more than half as much per capita compared with in the 1970s — as improved technology means automobiles and other applications require less of it. At the same time, improved steelmaking productivity means the industry requires dramatically less labor. Steel production is down by a third since the 1970s, but employment is down by about three-quarters.

That is interesting!

I am glad you showed the statistics.

Steel was already shedding jobs in the 1970's, I knew (and worked with) more former steelworkers than employed ones at that time in my area.

I think the tariffs are a smokescreen.
I think Trump is only applying these tariffs in order to force countries to negotiate with him to avoid the tariffs.
Its similar to his approach to North Korea, he scared the crap out of Kim, forcing Kim to hug South Korea (and ultimately hug America).

Starting to sound like a Liberal Anti-Trump thread. All the Liberal Democrats have predicted that everything he did would not work, but guess what, its working. Don't forget, these are the same folks who said he would never be President, and guess what, he is. America is becoming a much better place to be. If this improves out Steel business, and eliminates some foreign steel, more power to him. Liberal Predictions have no credibility.

So what? If we use less Steel, it doesn't mean we have to import all of it now. We still use a lot of Steel, and if we can make it to meet demands, then we have more jobs, more income, can spend more, and improves the economy. There will always be folks who will always come up with reasons why Trump is wrong. Same folks who said ne would never be President.

I'd be happier if they'd just give it to us for free.

Liberals want all Americans on the dole apparently. Or working at Walmart. This is one Republican who wants good high paying jobs for Americans.
