I was talking to one of my old friends yesterday and he was celebrating because he just got news that he won the "welfare lottery" by getting approved for some type of housing voucher where he only has to pay $300/month for rent and the rest is subsidized by the state government. Granted: only a smaller percentage of applicants get approved for this, and his parents hired an expensive lawyer who was probably able to pull some strings. Still, I think this is ridiculous. He's getting new a 2-bdrm apartment in an expensive PNW city, where a new 2-bdrm apartment is $2,500/month at the least. He's excited because this voucher, combined with his "Disability" check from the federal government, will be plenty to fund his casino and weed habits.

I work 60+ hours per week, don't drink, smoke or gamble, live in the same area, and can only afford a 1-bdrm apartment. How ridiculous is that?

And liberals want me to believe that "Welfare bums" is don't exist and I should support Bernie Sanders?

Hard to say, since you didn't provide enough details about the program to identify it.

A state program, I guess? Blame someone in your state's government.

Did Sanders campaign on subsidized apartments? I don't recall that. I'm pretty sure his main issue was keeping Wall Street under control.

I know a woman who faked disability at work, has 3 kids with different fathers and collects spousal support after divorce. She was banging different guys and didn't care he knew. Then she kept shopping doctors until she found one to label the kids autistic so she could get money from both State and Feds. So, that is her income stream. They are out there.

He's disabled if he's getting disability payments. What kind of disability is he on? Is it from the military or SSDI or SSI?

Too bad he doesn't realize that his "old friend" is a judgemental back stabber. Either that, or this is a made up thread meant to sow discord. That's just as likely as it being a true story.

He's not physically disabled. He was diagnosed with a psychiatric condition during childhood.

Government, i.e. “taxpayer”, funded housing has been around for quite some time.

Well then, he's mentally disabled. Why would you consider him a "welfare bum"?

What is on disability for?

At least he is a single, unmarried with no children rather than a poor women who is pregnant each year with a new parolee.

In my opinion, they should build single-room occupancy buildings for people like him that are kept clean with job connecting people who have a connection with different employers in the community.

Rather than an expensive luxury apartment, people in situation should pay a percentage of rent to live in a clean, single-room occupancy with services to connect him to employment, even if it is just 20 hours a week.

It would be much cheaper just to build single-room occupancy buildings or in cheaper cities buy foreclosed homes and just rent to disabled and have services to connect them with work if they can work a little for self-esteem purposes.

If he can work, he should be connected to work. If he can't work, he should not be allowed to purchase cigarettes, drink and gamble with taxpayer dollars.

They should hire homeless people to do audits of how taxpayer dollars are used, so that way disabled are spending their money on wholesome food and gym memberships not casino's and booze.

It seems weird he would be approved for a 2 bedroom , is he living alone?

For real cases where one can’t work I can see why we would need subsidized housing . But there are a ton of people benefiting that don’t need it .

I also think rent control has gotten out of hand it’s become a big mess in L.A .

Ever notice how the cities with strong rent control are the most expensive , nyc , la , sf etc ?

Why?

I have no idea. You present no actual facts regarding this single case except the usual right-wing "talking points" that assumes the world is full of "welfare bums living high on the hog on mah taxes!" You have no evidence except "believe me - I'm on the internet!" and have sullied any attempt to have a rational discussion with partisan phrases like "liberals," "welfare bums" and the usual right-wing lunacy.

Let's answer a different question: why are hordes of impoverished coal miners able to get Trump's government to subsidize their dead industry at my expense (as a taxpayer) instead of finding real work elsewhere?

We can play this game all day.
