Or try to grab him. I always hear about how cops risk their lives, but it seems like they refuse to take any level of risk.
Grabbing a man with a pipe in his hand would be insane. The officer backed up for 40 seconds as the suspect approached. Pull out the taser and tell him he's getting it if he doesn't drop what is in his hand.
At no point did the man place a second hand on the pipe, nor did he raise it above his waist. That was an unacceptable use of force.
Completely acceptable. He continued to approach the officer when told to drop his deadly weapon and he failed to do so. He continued to move forward. One shot to the shoulder stopped him as needed.

There are at least four cops in that video. Trying to subdue a man who never raised the pipe in an offensive posture isn’t crazy.
Despite all the excuse-making in this thread, people really need to understand that the University of Chicago and the immediate surrounding areas are NOT safe neighborhoods.
Police in this area knew the man well, knew he was bipolar, and knew that he didn't pose a deadly threat. That's why many people in this neighborhood that know this are outraged. Police used to be taught to deescalate situations like this.

The only excuse-making is coming from the cop apologists. Having lived in that neighborhood, I can assure that the violent crime in surrounding neighborhoods did not make the victim of that shooting any more dangerous.
At least you guys have gotten past blaming the gun. Baby steps.
