Nah, don't need to really try again. Whether fence jumpers or over stayers, they're all still criminals and they are all still being detained and being forced to work for their keep.

Overstay is a civil violation.

They are not convicted of anything. As a matter of fact, some of them have legal status which is bourne out in their hearings. Some are visa overstays, a.k.a. not criminals. Regardless, none of them should be subjected to forced, unpaid labor.

Those who are paid for labor receive $1 a day, which violates minimum wage laws. These detainees are not convicted criminals, and many of them are eventually released, after their immigration hearings.
It seems to me that them doing some of the cleaning duties would help defray the cost of their room and board as they are being detained?

As it is, these ICE detainees really just need to be sent back to their home countries ASAP. We don't want them here. And their stay in these facilities aren't meant to be all comfort and relaxation.

No, that has not been determined. That is what will be determined at the court date. They have not been convicted of anything. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? You don't seem to believe in our justice system.

You know what else? Coming here illegally is a misdemeanor. And being here, after coming legally, is not crime, but it is against federal immigration law, and you can be deported. Neither one warrants jail time. There are other crimes that often accompany being here illegally like using IDs and the such, no one here complains about that. I wish people would have a little compassion and stop acting like these people are hardened criminals. Haven't any of you fired a gun within city limits? Had a DUI? Possessed marijuana? Do you think you should have been treated like these people are being treated? I don't.

Private prison industry has become a multi billion dollar industry who lobbies and payouts to politicians rival those of "big pharma" and "big oil". Private prison industry also houses a number of illegal immigrants.
Do you think the private prison industry and it's shareholders wants less illegal immigrants or less crime in general? I'd say no because it would be a huge loss of money for them.

It sets up the situation of more laws and less freedom for us because the more things that are criminal the more they can imprison people, and it sets up a situation of a industry prefering crime to fill it's coffers while we suffer from crime.

I don't even see this topic as a left vs right thing, because more crime, more things that are criminal and more illegal immigrants hurts us all.

Truthfully, immigration is not a neat left/right issue, but the American right has been co-opted by bigots who resent what they see as the browning of America. Conservativism is being replaced by white nationalism.

Why should we have compassion for law breakers who steal American jobs, taxes and resources? Where was their compassion for Americans?

So, if any Americans have committed crimes on our own soil (and usually held accountable for it) that should negate our immigration laws and the enforcement of them? Are you serious?

How are these illegal aliens being treated badly? Misdemeanors are not felonies but they are still crimes. Many illegal aliens have been deported and returned that's a felony. Many of them have committed felony ID theft or tax evasion. Those are both crimes. Wake up!
