Reports have been obtained by the New York Times that show Purdue knew what was happening all the way back to 1997. In 2006, the DOJ recommended Purdue executives be indicted on felony charges:
"DOJ prosecutors wrote in the 2006 report that Purdue continued to market Oxy as “less prone to abuse and addiction than other prescription opioids” while knowing about the reports of abuse. They also recommended that Purdue executives be “indicted on felony charges, including conspiracy to defraud the United States,” but top DOJ staff during the George W. Bush administration “did not support the move” and settled with the pharmaceutical company in 2007."
Origins of an Epidemic: Purdue Pharma Knew Its Opioids Were Widely Abused
A confidential Justice Department report found the company was aware early on that OxyContin was being crushed and snorted for its powerful narcotic, but continued to promote it as less addictive.
No different than what the tobacco companies have been doing for decades. years ago, some even tried to claim smoking was a healthy thing to do, but when tobacco is found to have ZERO positive uses....what happens...nothing...anyone 18 and over and can just about anywhere and buy as much tobacco as they like 24/7.
I do not understand why they targeted access to these opioid drugs as quickly as they did, why didnt they just slap a sin tax on them and continue to let them fly off the shelves? If its really about the money and govt revenue on tobaccos sin tax, why would they not want another, much more profitable stream? It should be noted many addicts were willing to pay $100+ for ONE SINGLE Oxycontin for awhile!!! What govt or company does not take full advantage of that?!
I truly believe this was the drug cartels getting rid of the competition, they used DEA and US lawmakers to ensure the pharma companies could be regulated out of the opioid business, and wallah, as soon as they crack down on doctors/ pharma companies, all those addicts switched to heroin..Gee who would have thought that was going to happen?! Now the cartels have all the former pill addicts as heroin addicts. they succeeded in other words.
