"We are no longer a pageant," Gretchen Carlson, the first former Miss America to be named chair of the Board of Trustees of the Miss America Organization, said on "GMA." "We are a competition."
In place of the swimsuit portion of the competition, Miss America contestants will now take part in a live interactive session with the judges, according to the organization.
...
"We’ve heard from a lot of young women who say, ‘We’d love to be a part of your program but we don’t want to be out there in high heels and a swimsuit,’ so guess what, you don’t have to do that anymore," Carlson said. "Who doesn’t want to be empowered, learn leadership skills and pay for college and be able to show the world who you are as a person from the inside of your soul."
She continued, "That’s what we’re judging them on now."
Based on where American culture is right now, this is not surprising.
And the interactive session will be a contest to see who can best articulate elite liberal talking points. I know that's not specified, but I thought I would fill that in as well.
I think that this may be a good thing, a real cultural advance. It probably will hurt ratings though.
I like to ogle after pretty girls less than half my age, of course, I can't deny it, but these people are much more than sexual objects. They can look lovely in any attire anyway, we don't need to leer at their skin to know that. It's just the wrong message for our younger women.
Let them express their talents, and ideas and values, and their dreams.
I watched this pageant faithfully as a young girl, back when the announcer provided the weight, measurements, height stats on each contestant. we watched the show for the swimsuit and evening gown competitions only.
the contest changed and dropped our favorite part of the show. who really cares what some beauty thinks about climate change or about the pathetic talent competition?
haven't watched any beauty pageants since the 80s. who has?

I'm not interested in seeing 400 pound contestants on stage. It is still a beauty pageant after all and I have zero desire to see some lumpy, frumpy contestant on stage. What is so terrible about rewarding physical beauty? It is a gift just like having high IQ is a gift.
But seriously? Live talking points? I suppose that will provide comedy and show how vapid some of these contestants can be. They always give the usual PC fluff when answering questions anyways.
What's next, the slinky evening gowns. Why don't they just send in emails with their answers to the worlds problems.
Victorian America makes a comeback.
I see no issue with this. What does it matter how a woman looks in a swimsuit? I think that sort of stuff is best reserved for the Hawaiian Tropic contests on the beach.
This is supposed to be a talent and scholarship contest, so why not focus on talent and scholarly pursuits?
I mean, they still have evening gown to show off how attractive the contestants are when they dress up. Why would that not suffice? You can still see how they look while they are wearing clothing.

I doubt they'd totally scrap any sort of attractiveness portion of the competition. Not all evening gowns have to be skin tight.
