$9 Bil Surplus -- after socking away $14 bil into a rainy day fund, money to be saved to help the budget during the next recession. California's economy is larger and more successful than most countries -- and is ranked No. 5 in the world.

And before anyone says "Thanks Trump" the state's economy has been building up this momentum for the last 9 years. It's an example of Blue State Success.

I'll think enjoy this news and our wonderful weather by firing up the grill and sipping a nice local wine. Cheers!

This is why blue states need to regionalize and separate from red states. There is no reason we should be supporting red states who consider education "elitist", seek farm subsidies for products that get thrown away due to overproduction and have the top five states in the South as the top five states on Disability in the country. Blue states need to work together and pull away from red states. Both sides will be happier.

You do realize the red parts of those blue states won't be coming with you.

Liberals will believe anything positive about blue states while virtue signaling about how much better they are than everyone else.

https://californiapolicycenter.org/c...vernment-debt/

$1.3 TRILLION in unfunded debt.

The study concludes:

“Combining California’s debt with publicly held federal debt, we estimate a total debt-to-GDP ratio of 125% (or 153% using the broader definition of federal debt). This level places California distressingly close to peripheral Eurozone countries that faced financial crises in 2011 and 2012. Portugal’s 2015 debt-to-GDP ratio was 129% and Italy’s was 133%.”

And that's fine. They can pay to build their own roads and infrastructure, fund their own schools, etc.

It's nice they have a surplus. Now they can pay their bills.

California ranks dead last in budget transparency

Bottom line? The majority party has adopted laws and policies which will unquestionably push state spending permanently higher by expanding programs, increasing welfare costs and giving their political funders – labor unions – higher compensation via costly collective bargaining agreements. Our elected leadership is driving California right off the cliff. Thelma & Louise would be proud.

California now has a large rainy day fund -- which will act as a savings account to help make those mortgage payments during the lean times.

Look here: California debt clock. Debt to GDP ratio is less than 16%. By any objective measure that's a low and healthy number.

Awesome! Why don't you secede and keep it all for yourselves? I'd support you.

LOL. No one anywhere has ever said that, let alone the citizens of an entire state. No one thinks that education is "elitist".

And there is absolutely no basis for concluding that blue states are subsidizing red states. It should be obvious that it is the other way around, which is one of many reasons we'd be glad to cut you lose.

Secede!

Separate!

It's mutual.
