Seriously. Want to know how your being played? e-verify is by far the most effective method to stop illegal immigration. The wall is dumb. And when it came time to vote on something to deal with the illegal immigration problem, many Republicans realized they had issues with the idea of actually passing something that might be effective.

But controversial conservative proposals like requiring E-Verify, which mandates that employers check the legal status of workers, risked losing the support of Republicans — especially those with agricultural districts who rely on immigrant labor
Thats right. They dont want something effective. They want something to convince their base that they care about it.

First here to rep.
Thanks.
No surprise.
It s easier to cage children then go up against businesses that profit from cheap illegal labor.

Republicans will always choose to oppress the weak further and blame someone else.

You can't believe everything you read on Vox... The real reason are midterms and amnesty don't mix...

I lean comservative, and I agree many republicans in congress are totally dishonest and duplicitous regarding immigration problems and care more about cheap labor business money/support than reforming our immigration laws and supporting what 80% of Americans want done.

Amnesty for the dreamers? Please. Look at the bill. If that can;'t pass, theres no way you can believe for a second that Republicans are serious about this topic.

And nothing will pass like this after the midterms. And congress knows it. Now is the last chance they will have to pass anything like this.

There can be no greater proof that Republicans do not want to do a thing about immigration than the failure of this Congress to mandate e-verify. The only thing the GOP is interested in is fanning flames that keep the firestorm going, without lifting a finger to do anything about it.

Why? Because their brain-dead followers will believe them every time when they tell them it's the left, holding up the stupid wall, as the reason nothing can be done.

Here they had a chance to put their money where their mouths are and actually vote for something effective, but they punted instead.

You watch, they will find a way to lay this failure at the Democrats' feet. Their followers have no cognitive skills they need to worry about, so they know that they'll buy whatever crap the GOP feeds them and beg for more.

The only way immigration reform is going to pass is to do it with reconciliation, assuming it is introduced as a budgetary item.

I don't see how republicans defend this failure, I always thought the wall was just for the election campaign to appeal to their voters as if that was a solution. If they didn't have jobs they wouldn't be here in the first place. Republicans are talking out of both sides of their mouths, obviously businesses need these immigrants.

Last chance? A little melodramatic, don't you think? The midterms are going to go well for the Republicans... Sorry, that's life... A comprehensive immigration reform would be nice, piecemeal will still work...

I don't know if you noticed, but this is in the house, where its a majority vote-just like reconciliation. Immigration is not going to pass, because honestly Republican representatives do not want it to.
