Too bad they don't have our 1st Amendment. This is absolutely ridiculous.

A criminal arrest warrant was put out last week for a Canadian bus driver, a Christian man named Bill Whatcott, for distributing "safe sex" pamphlets which condemned homosexuality — at a gay pride rally. This was apparently a "hate crime."
The 51-year-old has been charged with the "Wilful Promotion of Hatred against an identifiable group, namely the gay community" and faces up to two years behind bars. According to a news release from the Toronto Police Service, Whatcott was arrested in Calgary on June 22 in connection to the "Hate Crime investigation." Whatcott says he drove to the station and turned himself in.
Canada's law...
For a prosecution to go ahead, all of these conditions must be met:
1. The hate speech must be the most severe of the genre;
2. The hate speech must be targeted to an identifiable group;
3. It must be public;
4. It must be deliberate, not careless;
5. Excluded from hate speech are good faith interpretations of religious doctrine, discussion of issues of public interest, and literary devices like sarcasm and irony;
6. The statements must be hateful when considered in their social and historical context;
7. No prosecution can proceed without approval of the attorney-general, which introduces political accountability because the attorney-general is a cabinet minister.
As you can see the charges against a citizen are not knee-jerk reactions. All things have to be weighed by the highest ranking attorney general of Canada.
Toronto is a very inclusive city and it prides itself as a place of tolerance and basic respect. Maybe not agreement on how people live their lives, but most people give the basic amount of respect nonetheless. I don't think this was a hate crime either, but it WAS incitement and harrassment, which IS a hate crime according to the criminal code. Personally I don't think "hate crime" should be used as an umbrella term like this because it cheapens the seriousness of it when it really does happen. I would just call it harrassment and incitement.
People put Jesus to death because he spoke the Truth, which would be defined as hate speech today. Jesus said there is only one way and He was it; there was no inclusivity with Jesus because He preached and taught the narrow way of God. He boldly preached it among the people in the streets, in the synagogues and to the political leaders alike -- and they eventually killed Him.

Yeppers; that Jesus was quite a guy.
However, you comparing his persecution to some putz like Whatcott getting what he deserves does him more disservice than you could possibly imagine.

The MAGA barge is missing one of it's oarsman.
Here's something Jesus said that people today would call Him judgmental and seek charges of hate speech.
Matthew 15
[10] And he [Jesus] called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
[11] Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
[18] But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
[19] For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
[20] These are the things which defile a man:

Oh brother! In what country do you believe any of those would constitute "hate speech".
Inserting religiosity onto the "wrong" side of this issue shows pure desperation to find any kind of solid patform to stand upon, even the zealotry, totally devoid of any logic or reason kind.

Common on. You can think deeper than that. Look around you, the foundation is laid already. A man gets arrested for telling homosexuals the truth about their diseases and the road to hell.

The man gets arrested for having a record and continuing to counsel hate towards an identifiable minority group. You know, the stuff Jesus would NEVER, EVER do.
I would admonish you to take your own words of "deep thinking" into consideration whenever attempting to insert religious zealotry into a discussion of laws.
I'm old enough to understand attempting to reasonably debate anything with a zealot, overcome with his/her prejudice, of any kind is like pizzing into the wind.

This man was stating his sincere religious beliefs, shared by most Christians, so even under Canadian law it shouldn't be hate speech
I highly doubt a liberal Canadian court would bring charges against a Muslim who stated the Islamic beliefs of gender inequality, the wife as property, the supported for arranged marriage and the hatred of Jews/Israel.
