I don't remember hearing any previous President mention anything about this. I doubt that most people are even aware that foreign countries have been using America as their Piggy bank for decades.

Why did it take the American mid-west to be literally destroyed economically before a President came along to address the issue of unfair trade?

I think it ties in with other recent presidents having so many connections with companies that gave huge donations and "bought" the president his position in office. Those companies had trade deals in place and probably steered them away from focusing on trade, or making adjustments to trade at all. Most presidents probably were ill-advised to even tackle trade due to "trade wars," as the media so often loves to tag it.

Since Trump has zero financial obligations to any major company or corporation, he does not have anyone "pulling his strings" in any one direction during his presidency. As-a-result, I think he is more of the notion to tackle these subjects that have seemed "taboo" or "too politically challenging" or "too risky to a politicians' career" if the president took them on. Trump has the ability to shake things up, and get things done for certain issues that other presidents would've avoided.

Although Trump can be highly divisive, I think he is shaking up the office of the President, and he is a really good thing for both the Presidency, as well as the US long-term.

The unfair about trade deals is that Wall Street are writing these trade deals and the workers and labor unions are left out with no say in the matter. Its not really "America vs the foreign countries" but "Wall Street vs labor". I dont see Trump boosting labor unions at all at the expense of Wall Street.

Targeting foreigners when the population is crushed economically by the domestic elites is a common tactic though. Its often used when income inequality gets so out of hand that the elites feel compelled to address it and point to a bogeyman (not themselves of course).

Because Barak had no clue about finance, and Mooch was too busy telling parents they are too stupid to feed their kids while shoving a rack of ribs down her gullet

How does other countries taxing their own people make US their piggy bank?

TPP would have cut tariffs by 90% making US products much more attractive, but Trump thought that was a really bad thing, so he decided the scrap it, and hike taxes on American consumers instead.

He's not -- it's the only time you have listened.

Please don't make this like it is something new just because you have discovered it -- lol.

Trade tariffs have been a part of every administration since as long as I can remember.

Soft wood, dairy, wheat, cars, etc......

Nothing new here -- nothing new at all.

Ironically -- Trump's ignorance with international trade is why he is making such a big fuss about stuff he doesn't really understand.

Fighting over dairy tariffs when you have a surplus with a country is about as stupid as you can get.

Bringing up an anecdote about foreign visitors buying US goods to take home and not wanting to pay duty on these goods as some kind of evidence of unfair trade is completely asinine.

How old are you that you don't remember...
  • Bush put tariffs on steel and it cost the US a fortune. He had to remove them within the same year.
  • Obama put tariffs on Chinese tires. I remember it was right around the time I had to pay $400 (up 33% from the previous price) a tire to replace a set.

Tariffs don't work, we had two presidents who could not be more dissimilar both try this and it blew up in the collective face of the US.

Now for some reason trump thinks he can put more, deeper tariffs on more products from more countries and it will be an "easy win." See you on the bread line.

There is no VAT problem. Other countries have a sales tax on all goods, the same rate regardless of where the good come from, whether domestically produced or imported. Thats not a problem.
