China is moving into the vacuum left after Trump's rejection of the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership forged by President Obama to ensure lasting U.S. influence in the Far East.

"As protectionism concerns increase globally, it's important that the Asian region flies the flag of free trade," Japanese trade minister Hiroshige Seko said at a news conference, playing up potential for a year-end agreement.

Instead of major U.S. trading partners uniting against China, the U.S. is drawing fire from all sides for Trump tariffs. China is widely seen as the prime culprit in global steel overcapacity that spurred Trump's 25% steel tariff. Yet China has been a minor steel exporter to the U.S., so Trump picked a fight with Japan, the EU, Mexico and Canada.

While Japan remains wary of China, Trump's metal tariffs and abandonment of the TPP have Tokyo focused on tighter links with Beijing.
If Japan is for free trade then why not remove its 19% agricultural tariff and so on. Remove all tariffs...

World's Biggest Trading Bloc a Step Closer After Tokyo Meeting

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...-tokyo-meeting

Asian trade ministers took another step toward creating what could be the world’s biggest trading bloc on Sunday, expressing hope that a deal could be signed by the end of this year.

Ministers from the 16-nation Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which includes China, Japan and India but not the U.S., met in Tokyo on Sunday to try and thrash out remaining differences.

Any further progress on RCEP could put pressure on the U.S. to consider rejoining the TPP, as the U.S.-China trade war continues.
The solidarity of the RCEP is not unexpected, except by Trump. Canada, the EU and Asia will side step the USA for economic trade going forward. Trump has been stomping around like he's the world ruler, bullying everyone who doesn't do what he says. The less power he has, the angrier he becomes. The angrier he becomes, the more irrational his unilateral decisions.

Maybe you should watch what you put in your mouth if you’re sick.

Half of the worlds population will be in this trade deal. They will be able to put all kinds of pressure on US now that we are on our own.

We have made the entire western world wealthy. If they start screwing with us we will just close our military bases and bring our aircraft carriers home and invite Putin to have a free hand wherever he wants.

Would not surprise me if Trump did that.

And China will fill the void more than happily, hastening American decline and surrendering superiority of soft and hard power simultaneously. You’re like Trump. You haven’t thought this through.

Because Trump is the only one to be so hostile, so paranoid, so bullying, so shallow, with an eternal chip on his shoulder.

You do realize, right, that this is a scapegoating thing which has nothing to do with destroying America?

Of course they are. Pulling out of TPP was a great campaign soundbite aimed at the dimwitted that made little medium or long term economic sense to anyone with a modicum of foresight. Pulling out virtually guaranteed that there would be a new world order for trade and that the US would be on the outside looking in from both a tariff and a rulemaking perspective. This was the obvious result from the get-go.
