And some get turned into Grizzly poop nearly every year. Being in bear country without a firearm or at an absolute minimum a good bear spray is reckless. Polar bears are KNOWN for hunting humans for food. Shoot, shovel, shut up. No question the shooter did the right thing, sad someone had to be badly injured first.

It was necessary in this case, especially if it was a polar bear. They are one of the few non-human mammals that will actively prey on humans anytime. You certainly do not want to play dead with them...because they'll make the play real. lol

If they shot the bear to rescue the guy, obviously that was a good shoot.

I don't think, however, that it's generally necessary to put a polar bear down for having attacked a human if the danger has passed.

Polar bears are grizzlies' roid rage cousins. It's not comparable.

This is straight from a "Believe it Or Not" show, except it's true. A guard on ship cruising the Norwegian Arctic was attacked by a polar bear, causing moderate to severe head injuries. Another employee on the ship shot and killed the animal. Strong protests have broken out, with some questioning killing the bear for “acting like a wild animal.”.

Again, animals over people. How warped have peoples' values become? I would consider this a parody of the animal rights movement worthy of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels or Voltaire's Candide if it weren't true. So is the new slogan "animals are people too"? But it was a close call in New York State's highest Court: "NY's highest court rejects bid to grant chimps 'legal personhood"
I question the constant need for cruise ships to go to these places.

Wild Animals should be left alone and not made in to a tourist attraction.

When I read the title my fist thought was "Why was a bear on a ship and how did it get on the bridge?"

Reading the article and looking at the landscape this was a very careless action by the guards, it appears they should have seen the bear.

Quote:
No tourists had disembarked, Mr. Krause said, but four armed guards got off the vessel to inspect and secure the shore. The guards “are armed for safety reasons,” he added. “There are polar bears out there.”

He explained that usually, if a wild bear is seen, guards “shoot into the air” to scare the animal away. On Saturday morning, however, the injured guard did not see the polar bear, he said.

Scouting ahead is a careless action?

A careless action would be to allow passengers to step foot without Scouting ahead placing them into jeopardy...
What were they supposed to do? Call in a Seal team to eradicate any hostile threats in the AO beforehand? Have a couple A10s strafe the place?

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Except bears: Bears will kill you. What kind of a question is this?
