Arizona Governor Doug Ducey will appoint someone to the Senate who will serve until a Special Election can be held in November 2020 for the remainder of the term.

Ducey has an interesting decision to make, does he pick a placeholder that will only serve the two years leading to the Special Election? Does he pick someone in the mold of McCain that might challenge the President or leadership at times? Does he pick someone who is further to the right and will be more supportive of Trump?

Ducey himself is in a tight race for re-election so there is a bit of a tightrope he needs to walk in who he picks so it doesn't potentially hurt his own re-election chances.

He will try to please trump, most likely. Outside chance for a caretaker like retired Sen. Kyle, only because Ducey may himself want to run in 2020.

Let's keep in mind that it was McCain who purposely held onto to the seat past the deadline which would have allowed the election to take place this year.

So who ever is appointed, instead of elected, it's 100% on McCain.

While on that topic, back in April when word got out that McCain's health took a turn for the worse, the GOP legislature tried to move up the date in which the seat would have needed to be vacant by in order to have a Special Election this year (to March 31st which had already past) in case McCain happen to die prior to the May 31st deadline to avoid having a special election this year.

So what if it is?
If Trump has Ducey in the bag, a 2-year appointed replacement could save Trump's ass when the chips are down.
The chips will be falling on the table pretty soon now.

You should be glad McCain held out.

The #NeverTrumpers pretty much took themselves out of the running for this appointment (and thank goodness for that), primarily because they can't be trusted to not leave the party and start caucusing with the Dems due to their displeasure with POTUS (we've already seen multiple high level #NeverTrumpers leave the GOP). Funny thing is that these people are by and large hypocrites who would have been happy to see someone who was the polar opposite of what they stood for in terms of ideology (i.e. Hillary) if it meant denying Trump the White House, all because they didn't like how Trump speaks/attacks others when attacked. Well, while I wouldn't be upset if Trump toned down some of his rhetoric (and I note "some" as much of his push-back is welcome and shows that he has a backbone, which is more than I can say for most GOPers who would've stayed silent against the onslaught of MSM/Dem lies and attacks), I ultimately care most about results. And from the federal judiciary to tax cuts to trade deal reforms to enforcing our immigration laws, President Trump continues to deliver.
