Would that also include exclusive contracts like the one that allowed Shkreli to jack the price of Daraprim (pyrimethamine)
Some people were defending Shkreli when he jacked up prices of a life saving drug 400% claiming the company needed the increase for research, now we need to lower drug costs/
The pharmaceutical lobbies response seems to be focusing on research.
Quote:
“The administration is imposing foreign price controls from countries with socialized health care systems that deny their citizens access and discourage innovation,†said Stephen J. Ubl, the president and chief executive of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the main trade group for the industry. He said the proposal would “threaten patient access to innovative lifesaving medicines.
LOL. Drug companies would hire mexican cartel hitmen if someone went after their patents.
None of the pharma companies seemed to mind when Govt cracked down on their opioid prescription drugs, even though they lost billions as a result, not a single company tried to legally challenge the govt over these laws...?
In 2003, Democrats created a Senate bill to allow Medicare to negotiate prices of prescription medications. Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress. It failed to get 60 votes which would have allowed a hearing. Only 6 Republicans voted in favor.
The opposition framed it as a choice between government run healthcare vs a benefit best managed by the private sector. Many of those who voted against this bill are still in the Senate, including the Majority Leader.
This was all a part of creating government subsidized Medicare Part D in 2003 which became effective in 2006.
This legislation forbids Medicare from negotiating drug prices.
Sounds like Republicans at that time were OK with socializing a benefit by subsidizing private insurers rather than attacking the root cause, Big Pharma.
I hate Trump but good for him. Glad to see him do something positive.
You were getting worried that socialism was falling out of favor?
