If they are in the country illegally, than they should be sent back to their country of origins. If they come to our borders and seek asylum they should be allowed in after proper vetting.

Is there any reason why people applying for asylum, in view of the large number of people who abuse the asylum claim, should not do the same?
No, no one can apply at an embassy.

Can you imagine if the Vietnamese refugees had been told to apply at the US embassy, and then wait 10-15 years. Not that the embassy even existed anymore.

There is no "proper vetting" when an asylum seeker shows up at a US port of entry with no travel document or questionable documents. When I was on TDY in the southern border, I had cases where asylum seeker shows up to my booth with expired and unreadable foreign passport or national ID in their language. You make it sound as if CBP has access to crime/intelligence database of every country in the world.

The vetting is supposed to be done at their respective country by the US consulate.

The Vietnamese boat people were sent to refugee camps in Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia. They were processed (interviews, vaccination shots, medical check to make sure that they are not carrying any contagious diseases) by the UN Refugee Agency at those camps before they get sent to US, Canada, Australia, and Europe for settlement.

If these people are so desperately in need of asylum then why did they refuse Mexico's offer to settle there?

It's a start-why should criminals-people that have demonstrated their contempt for the laws of this country, be considered for asylum?

Regarding application-shut down any applications at our border crossings. Enforce laws requiring asylum applications to be submitted at US embassies and consulates only. The caravan can wait in Mexico while we put their applications in the stack to be reviewed.

Nope, entered illegally with their kids and the parents went to jail. Remember the pitiful liberal lament about separating kids? About to happen again.

The Vietnamese refugees were in open boats in the South China Sea.
