Lived there in the 80s. We were getting day old bread from bakeries and taking it to food pantries, health dept stopped us. Many fast food places would precook food for lunch rush, leftovers were donated to homeless shelters, health dept stopped that too. KFC only let the chicken sit for 8 minutes and donated it, many of them donated biscuits and slaw to go with it.
When I worked in Manhattan there were fast food places that wanted to give leftover food to the homeless. Their parent companies and local laws forbade it(liabilities for lawsuits). They got around this by placing all the leftovers in one garbage bag. When they put out the garbage at the end of the night, they indicated the leftover bag to the homeless. This solved 2 problems. The leftovers were distributed to people who wanted it and the rest of the garbage remained intact.
The point in the video about leaving the food tainted with bleach rather than removing it indicating that the action was not really about public health was well made.
You need a permit to serve food. This is for health reasons.
The reason the people in the video kept saying that they were having a picnic for their friends is because that's a loophole. They were not charging for the food. You are allowed to serve food created in your own kitchen to others without a permit; otherwise, a birthday party in the park for your kid and all his schoolmates would be illegal. Likewise, a neighborhood BBQ, a carry-in soup supper for a church congregation during Lent, or any number of other social events that are part and parcel of living in community. Think about that.
Just plain twisted.. But i could see the concern. But didn't have to go about it this way..
They're actually going to get permits now and follow the health department rules. I live in the area, it's been on the news\radio etc.
I love what these people are doing, I applaud their helping the less fortunate but at the same time rules like this were put into a place because of past situations like.....
Keep in mind that events like this were MUCH more common 100 years ago in the US. Bad meat etc. used to kill a lot of people in this country, those rules weren't put into place just for fun.
