The interesting question is Will he be ousted by the US-backed military like in Honduras? He said he was going to stop the war on drugs and make peace with the cartels, that means no need to continue to spend billions of dollars in the military and its main supplier the US. I have little faith the US will let him do it, he's going to be lucky if he is flown to a safe country, or he might end up assassinated.

Ive never understood why the Mexican govt has not joined up with the cartels sooner, and just grow the trade larger, the demand would still be coming from the US, but a cartel and govt joint venture would be more powerful.
Outgoing Peña Nieto is in the PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party) who have won virtually every Presidential election since the 1920's (Vincente Fox was an exception). PRI is a conservative old boys network putting forward a front man each election. All, including Nieto, leave their maximum 4 year term much wealthier than when they went in.
Nieto may have kept Mexico relatively stable but did little to address problems. During his term the peso dropped from about 12 pesos/dollar to 20 pesos/dollar, and he has one of the worst approval ratings of any Mexican President.
Quote:
Just like Donald Trump.
Unlike Trump, Obrador has a history in politics (incl. Mayor of Mexico City) and he walks the talk. He arrived to his Inauguration in a small Mexican made sedan - not in a limo. I hope he doesn't disappoint.

In the old days there was an unwritten deal: Pay us some money, try not to kill so many people and we'll let you run your business. That is how it used to worked until the US pushed the war on drugs in the 90's [which in reality is a bloody war on some cartels and the civilians in those areas have been suffering]. That is when illegal immigration to the US skyrocketed.
The new president might go back the old days of no war on drugs and less violence, at the risk the US conspires to take him out. Or maybe he was just lying to get elected and continue with business as usual.

The United States won't let him, Mexico is too close of a country.
That being said I thought the PRD was Mexico's main left wing political party and Obrador's party, at least from what I can gather from wikipedia, seems to the center of the PRD.
Also he doesn't seem to have to much support from the indigenous groups in the south which are the most heavily left wing groups.
edit: Though Jacobin claims Obrador's party is Morena is a left wing split of the PRD, but I'm still in a weight and see attitude with him.
Sounds more right-wing to me. He even hired Rudy Giuliani when he was Mayor of Mexico City.
