I suggest everyone, whether pro or anti vaccine do this. Ask as many people you know about whether or not they take the vaccines. Then on a matrix(4 squares) make 4 groups.
1) anti vaccine never get flu
2) anti vaccine gets flu
3) pro vaccine never get flu
4) pro vaccine gets flu
Yes it is annetodal, yes it is a small sample size, yes it probably is bias towards the type of people you know, etc etc
After I got my flu shot this year from the doctor, I went home and fell asleep. I woke up about 2 hours later to swollen glands and a sore throat. I was fine when I went to the doctor. I also had the hot red lump on my arm that I got in previous years.
So, over 40% of Americans refuse to get a flu shot.
I am one of those 40%. Why? Who knows what is in that shot? Also, it appears that it is just a mildly educated wild guess about what the next flu strain might be and that they usually gets it wrong.
No doubt this is a big winner for pharmaceutical companies, just like erectile dysfunction pills, opiods for the masses and statins (supposedly for high cholesterol). But that does not inspire me at all.

I have never gotten a flu shot and likely never will. Doing the basics -- eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep -- oh yeah - and avoiding a lot of people a lot of the time - will do wonders.
Regarding wearinf face masks in public, we saw a few here and I laughed so hard at them. What a bunch of antisocial, if you sick, stay home, dont wear face masks and then go out.
My doctor's office, a practice with four or five doctors, is now pretty much requiring people who are symptomatic (coughing, sneezing, etc.) to wear masks in the waiting room.
Looks very strange.
When I was in a couple weeks ago, for a blood pressure issue, I happened to cough. Told the receptionists I should get a mask. She laughed and rolled her eyes.
I've been a patient at the practice, and my particular doctor, for almost thirty five years.

The hitch in your behavior is "avoiding a lot of people". For most that's impossible. I would see upwards of 150 snot producers every day before I retired. The parents of these walking, talking, coughing, sneezing snot producers wouldn't even buy them Kleenexes to carry with them. They wouldn't buy them pencils, pens, notebooks or paper either.
I'm not surprised at that percentage. If 40% of the population supposedly supports Trump, I could surely believe that 40% would be paranoid enough not to get a flu shot. I can assure you that we get one every year.

I'm almost 50 years old and healthy. I've never gotten the flu shot. I am playing the odds and continuing to not get one. Why should I waste my time & money for something that I don't need?

By your own statement, you are playing the odds. Why do you consider that a waste of money, to improve those odds? No different than getting insurance that 99.9% of the time you won't use.
