It has nothing to do with being bright - it has to do with a desire to get that monkey off your back. I'd think the cost alone would be motivating.

Trust me, life is much better as a non-smoker than it is as a smoker - even if you love smoking, as I did.
Same in NYC.

I only smoke now when I'm hanging out at a bar having a few, which is not that often any more. Back in college and in my 20's I was a light but regular smoker.
