Officials also allegedly told employees "babysitting" or becoming a “mystery shopper” are options to make ends meet

Federal employees, their families, and those dependent on them remain caught in the crossfire of President Donald Trump’s pointless and destructive government shutdown, which he triggered in a desperate attempt to procure funding for his promised border wall. And so far, based on Trump’s tantrum’s there’s no end to the shutdown in sight.

This is what the USA gets when it allows a crackpot to squat in The Oval Office. Shameful!

I hope they use the government and are able to get paid since Congress does despite the shutdown. That isn't equal protection under the law. Government shutdowns should be ruled unconstitutional because they are. They break the 14th amendment. I hope the families gets the going rate of interest to pay off their debts incurred because of the shutdown.

Ha! 2013 there were suits. They ruled in favor of the employees and still saw no money. Btw embassy’s across the world are not paying the local bills in the perspective countries and maybe not pay those local employees. Lovely way to show how we are a strong country and to be respected, this is disgraceful

The Coast Guard in my area was called out to battle high seas when a distress signal came from a fishing boat. They weren't able to save the fishermen, but they risked their lives trying. Seems like there's a lot of young families in the Coast Guard, and the pay isn't that great in the first place.

Don't forget to file your earnings on garage sales and babysitting with the IRS. We wouldn't want Uncle Sam to be denied his cut.

You are correct. Most of the employees serve our nation out of loyalty /most do not make those big wages like the ones you see in DC. This is terrible !!!

Wait a minute. Why is this such a crisis now?

During the recession when folks were losing their jobs left and right Nancy Pelosi proudly told the unemployed that they were "freed from their job lock" and that they were now able to pursue writing poetry and painting nice pictures. UGH

Anyone that is furloughed now will be getting paid eventually when the Dems come to their senses.

Personally I think it is rather alarming that these people only have a few weeks of savings to get by. I know they don't make big money but still people should have some money saved up for a rainy day.

They should, but they don't.

There was a report done where something like 65% of the American public can't come up with $500 cash in the event of an emergency.

CareerBuilder had a survey where 78% of respondents said they were living paycheck to paycheck. Including 10% of those making over $100,000 per year.

What do you expect though? Our government is living way above its means, so why wouldn't the average American follow suit?
