Volkswagen announces Chattanooga will be the home to the company’s first electric vehicle manufacturing facility in North America. This will be the company’s second U.S. facility.

The project represents an investment of $800 million by Volkswagen and the creation of 1,000 jobs in Hamilton County. “As one of Hamilton County’s top employers, these additional 1,000 jobs will have a lasting impact on the region. I thank Volkswagen for its partnership and also applaud the company for its ongoing commitment to education and workforce alignment, which helps Tennessee build a pipeline of talent for years to come,” Haslam said.

Could this be due to Trump telling Merkel that if she built cars in the US there would be no tariffs on them?

So if you're looking for a new job, head south!

BMW started putting plants in U.S. when Obama was president. You knew that though.

So its a new plant. I pointed out that foreign companies have built car plants in the U.S. for decades. This is hardly news. There are also U.S. car companies building overseas plants.

You can't seriously be telling us that Trump is to take credit for a facility manufacturing electric cars?!?!?!

Or maybe you care to tell us that "drill baby drill" is a hoax?

And here is what Obama said.

Obama, June 1, 2016: Now, the good news is that there are entire new industries that are starting to pop up and you’re actually seeing some manufacturers coming back to the United States because they’re starting to realize, “You know what? Energy prices are lower here, workers are better here, this is our biggest market. And so even though we off-shored and went someplace else before, now it turns out we’re better off going ahead and manufacturing here.”

But for those folks who have lost their job right now because a plant went down the Mexico, that isn’t going to make you feel better. And so what we have to do is to make sure that folks are trained for the jobs that are coming in now because some of those jobs of the past are just not going to come back, and when somebody says, like the person you just mentioned who I’m not going to advertise for, that he’s going to bring all these jobs back, well how exactly are you going to do that? What are you going to do?

There’s — there’s no answer to it. He just says, “Well, I’m going to negotiate a better deal.” Well, how — what — how exactly are you going to negotiate that? What magic wand do you have? And usually, the answer is he doesn’t have an answer.

Can you update us on GoPro and how many jobs they brought to the states?

VW is current a failed company. The TN plant is producing 100's of thousands less cars than anticipated.

Here are some basics....when built and started:

"The plant will be able to make 150,000 vehicles a year when it opens, but Volkswagen already is planning to start construction in 2011 of a second phase that would increase capacity to 592,000 vehicles a year.

Building a new sedan in Chattanooga is part of VW's plan to expand sales in the United States to 1 million a year by 2018, or more than four times the number sold last year. "

OK, so based on VW, they should have been up to easily that 600K per year plus by now in TN, 7 years after their second phase started. I don't think they hit 200K in 2108.......

VW is a screwy company - their own worst enemy and their failure to understand the American market has killed them. I challenge any of you to stop in a VW dealer and try to buy something...they have nothing to sell. I tried two or three times to buy a car from them and can't (arteon delayed many months, passat behind the times, no Alltracks, etc.)....

Hey, I hope they make and sell a lot of electric cars. I hope "conservatives" come around to buying them.

The BMW plant in Spartanburg (technically Greer, but it's referred to as Spartanburg) predates both Obama and Bush 43. It opened during the Clinton administration and actually was announced at the end of Bush 41's term.

It is currently the only manufacturing plant BMW has in the U.S., but they do have a building at the Port of Charleston where they make some finishing touches on vehicles being imported into the U.S. and vehicles being exported from Spartanburg.
