Imagine the outcry if the Republicans had tried to stop Obama from delivering a State of the Union address.

It's a courtesy for the Speaker to invite him to address a joint session of Congress, but under the circumstances, it's reasonable to suggest a delay until the government is open.
Bingo.

It would take a lot of gall to demand that security people work overtime without getting paid to protect those who won't do their jobs.

Joe "you liar" Wilson!
Proved to be right on the money over and over.
Let us see, if the Democrats can measure up to that historic, ironic moment.

She wants it in writing, to compose a rebuttal.
She can hear it, or not. Her choice. No one is forcing her.

Trump's State of the Union will be either a sniffling, lackluster reading of a speech written by Miller such as his last turn at the teleprompter, or another campaign rally speech where he may well go off script and lead "Mexico' and "lock her up" type chants.

Republicans will be in the awkward position of applauding and standing for nonsense or leaving him hanging.

It's an embarrassment for for the party, the Presidency, and the nation.

News stations will carry split screens with lies listed as he spouts them. That's a given.

Pelosi might be offering him a way out here, much as she encouraged him not to make a fool out of himself in front of the cameras about owning his shutdown. He walked into that. It was all Schumer could do to keep from laughing out loud.

Or she might be using a bit of reverse psychology here. She offers him an out. He refuses.

^Also what I think. Individual 1 will do the opposite of what she suggests. Gotta love her!

But not on an annual basis. Odd that you didn't know that. Article II, Section 3 provides 'from time to time'. It has become an annual tradition, but Trump supporters love that he does not adhere to tradition!

Any, both chambers of Congress must first pass a resolution inviting the President to give a state of the union address. While Ms. Pelosi, back on January 4th, extended an invitation to speak on January 29th, in her capacity of Speaker, neither chamber has actually passed said resolution.

Anyway, one knows that Mr. Trump is fuming. How he looked forward to marching down the center aisle, with members of both sides standing and applauding!

We must not forget, as an aside, that Mr. Hannity, one of Mr. Trump's advisors (oddly, he simply has a television show on Fox) had urged Mr. Trump to not end the shutdown until after the SOTU (which Mr. Hannity is obviously implying that Mr. Trump could indeed 'end the shutdown').

So, on the one hand, Mr. Trump thinks Mr. Hannity's advise good: keep the government shut down until after the SOTU speech. But, if he is not allowed to give a speech, what can he do?

Of course, he could send a letter to Congress, as was the usual way from George Washington up to Coolidge or so.

Or, he could tweet out his SOTU.

Or, he could finish off those burgers.

One more case where I have trouble deciding if it's more irony or hypocrisy. Nancy is one of the biggest threats to our civil rights regarding the 2nd. She wants to deny ordinary American citizens the right to protect themselves-while she's too much of a coward to go to work without being surrounded by armed guards. All while doing her best to ensure that violent criminals have free access to this nation.

Thing is, SOTU is an address to the PEOPLE of the United States. Doing so in front of the congressional windbags is a courtesy. Just have it televised direct from the oval office and bypass the children and their temper tantrums.

If Trump wants to give his SoTU address, he can do it from the oval office if he wants. Speaking to Congress is by invitation only, even for the President. He simply is not being invited.

What would be funny is if they did invite him, then all walked out about 10 minutes into the speech, just like he did at the White House.

What is wrong with you? I didn't say that.

I simply laid out in my first point an answer to the OP's question, IE: "Why does Pelosi want the State of the Union delayed?"
