"NEW YORK (CBS) ― You may not realize it, but members of the House of Representatives can lease a car and have it paid for by you -- the taxpayer. And it's not just the car, but gas, registration, insurance … the works.
Congressman Charles Rangel was recently seen getting out of his Cadillac DeVille, which he leases for $774 per month. Then there was Congressman Jose Serrano, getting out of his Buick LaCrosse, which he leases for $317 per month. And how about this one: Congressman Gregory Meeks was recently seen waiting for Congressman John Conyers to step out of Meeks' Lexus LS460, which Meeks leases for $998 per month."

If they fall under the perdiem rate, then it is cool. Since they maintain two households, they obviously get per diem.

That may be true; I don't know exactly how that works. If it is a per diem, the problem is that they get to set the per diem and set it at a rate that allows them to drive a top-of-the-line Lexus or a Cadillac.
I don't. I don't like driving, and driving and me don't get along very well.
The cars I HAVE owned have broken down to to some major catastrophic failure...(engine, head gasket, radiator)...within just a few months of purchase. So I don't think it's cost effective to own one. I walk instead.
Well, the point here is once again merely to rail mindlessly against taxes. It all goes back to the right-wing Rule of Two Standards. It's perfectly fine for corporations to steal from the pockets of taxpayers in their roles as consumers of private sector goods in order that some CEO or other might have a fine automobile to move around in as he outsources our jobs, conspires to suppress our wages, and cuts back on our pension and medical benefits programs. That's capitalism! But let a politician be seen in anything more deluxe than a '76 Nash Rambler and it's some sort of outrage. That's socialism! And we've all been told what comes after that...
I don't drive yet. But, when I turn 16 the 'rents are getting me a Land Rover.
Personally. I don't see a problem with them getting cars and having taxes pay for them.
The costs are ... minimal (compared to other unneeded government spendings, ie: welfare).
You're right. Welfare is totally unneeded. After all, since we all have mommies and daddies who can buy us Land Rovers, why does the government ever need to step in? God bless ya, kid. I truly hope your luck never changes.
Back on topic, I think this is hardly the most egregious use of taxpayer dollars, but it is maybe a bit silly to have no cap on lease amounts and no real oversight on what happens to the money. Why not a stipend towards car leases? 300 bucks per month. Use it however you'd like.
Then again, the article said the senate doesn't offer subsidized leasing. How do they handle the car situation? I'm sure there's still some sort of subsidy.

I need to sign up for a job that allows me to set my per diem to drive a luxury car. Very poor example being set in Washington these days.

LOL and who would set the per diem rate for Congress? How much do you think the White House spends on transportation? Probably several hundred million per year....
