Republican Congressman Walter Jones Jr of NC-3 has been placed in Hospice Care according to his wife. Jones.
Jones broke his hip on Jan 14th and had surgery the following day. He has been unable to attend any votes since September on the House floor due to an undisclosed illness.
Very sad. My mother broke her femur in November, and she had a setback with infection, so the recovery is going very slowly. I understand how devastating this is for the family. My deepest sympathies to the Congressman and his family.
That's sad. Why is breaking a hip a death sentence for so many older people? Is it the trauma of surgery that begins the downward spiral, or the inactivity?

I don't know. We went through it with my mother. It was all down hill from there.

Its not widely reported but some just fall down and die.
Only the autopsy reveals a broken hip and internal bleeding as the cause of death.
Some die from head injury caused by the fall.
Did they break their hip and then fall or did they fall breaking their hip ?

A broken hip can also lead to other internal injuries especially in older people.
In the case of Jones there have also been underlying health issues. He hasn't voted in Congress since September, due to an undisclosed illness, and he wasn't in Washington for the swearing in of this term. Congressman G.K Butterfield (D-NC) actually went to Jones's home and did the swearing him for him there It was also announced a few weeks ago that this would be his last term (unclear if his health had anything to do with that decision as Jones hinted at it prior to his current health issues being made public)
I haven't seen it made public what his illness was, but considering he wasn't voting in Congress for a few months prior to the latest issue, it likely was something serious. Add a broken hip into the mix and that it is a terrible combination.
Obviously yes, he did have prior health issues. A broken hip is very painful, so if he was already ill, the painkillers may be too much for his body.
Judging from my Mom's experience, it takes a lot of work for the elderly to come back from these types of injuries. She was in excellent shape beforehand, leading aerobics classes three days a week, walking three miles a day, and it is still taking a long time for her to recover. If you start off in poor shape, your chances of overcoming all the obstacles that are in your path to recovery are much slimmer.
I feel for his family. I wish him a painless passing if that is what is on his near horizon.
