Because its a threat to our democracy when a tiny elite has enormous power to control the political system. You have to choose, either democracy or massive inequality. If you choose oligarchy over democracy you are simply working as a shill for the rich.
Short answer is not to think there will ever be a day when we don't have poor people and/or rich people, but there is what can be done to help limit the disparities of opportunity between those born disadvantaged vs those born with advantage.
They get free primary school, free secondary school and free college, technical or vocational school.
What more do you want?

There's opportunities a-plenty. If they refuse to take advantage of them, there's nothing that can be done, right?
First of all you are assuming that everyone wants to close the gap between rich and poor. Many people want to widen the gap between the rich and the poor, by enriching themselves at the expense of the poor. Donald Trump is a perfect example, and the billionaire class he represents.
First of all, not true. In fact the opposite! Read my opening comment again and you might notice how I explain a person will be for or against these sorts of efforts depending on their views about "closing the gap between rich and poor."
Wanting to "enrich" oneself, as I have always strived to do, on my own behalf and family is a far cry from wanting more poor people to struggle or have access to the same opportunity to do so.
