no good can come from getting in a verbal fight about politics, especially with a loved one. There are many in my extended family that have different views than me. We just avoid controversial subjects when together. If they try to bring up something in conversation I know will be contentious, I change the subject.
We rarely talk politics, when we do we mostly agree. There are many more important things than politics to discuss. Weather, sports, health, plans for the future, restaurants, and recipes.
This is about the only place that I weigh in on my least favorite and most aggravating subject.

Such a shame. I'm an only child - I always wished I had a sibling and I couldn't imagine ruining a relationship with any family member over politics. It's so meaningless in the scheme of things.
Your brother is far more important than political ideals.
I was raised in a Democrat family and unlike some of them, I prefer keeping it cordial and classy and leave my views at home. They are always frustrated and going off on the latest developments of the government while I merrily eat my food.
Well, you didn't elaborate on the situation but since you state that the relative is "combative" I'm going to guess that you are just going about your business and they are being obnoxious? If that's the case, I'd say "Look we don't agree, and I'm not getting into this with you at a family outing. Either stop talking politics or we won't get together anymore." Hopefully they aren't your parents.
