The knitting community is reckoning with racism (Obama, election, elect)

But it could happen in some circles. There are surely "knitting snobs" and cliques. People who did not fit in may have met some resistance and problems. It certainly could happen. It has happened to me, not in knitting, but in an arts environment, being given dirty looks or poor service because of how I looked or dressed.
Don't doubt that some people deliberately try to exclude others. I'm just saying that the reaction I've seen in the knitting community is more "OMG, that's terrible, we didn't know, please come knit with us".
I haven't seen it, no, but now I want to, just to check out the afghan! Crochet is better for afghans than knitting, IMO.

I totally agree with this statement!
My mom crocheted an afghan for me when I was in high school (over 40 years ago) that is being used by my son right now. He loves it, but needs another blanket under it because of the holes. I loved it because it was not super heavy.
At this very moment I am covered by a knitted lap blanket that she also made - this back in the late 60s. This is my favorite winter blanket because it is so heavy that I don't need any other covering.
I found the article fascinating because the only color I ever see (or think about) when knitting (I make slippers - and that is it!) is the color of the yarn I am currently using. I guess I never thought about WHO knits, because I assumed it was something done on a worldly scale.

8. When confronted with the fact that his rhetoric may be encouraging domestic terrorism, he has indicated he should maybe encourage it more, and has implied the press has it coming. [ https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trum...hreats-1190263 ]
I am rather surprised that a knitting and crocheting web site would take a political stance in regard to creating handicrafts. I wonder what their stance is in regard to pu$$y hats? Can one find other crochet designs of the feline persuasion on this site?
All joking aside, they do have a point. Trump does make fun of the disabled and his budget is anything but friendly to Americans with disabilities. His sexual conquests (and attitudes) are well known, and they can hardly be deemed respectful to women. Trump's hatred of the free press is also well known. Anything broadcast by Trump TV (Fox) is the Word direct from god, but god forbid that any sort of media even a fraction of a millimeter to the left of Infowars be allowed to disseminate any content whatsoever.
And what's up with this hatred for members of the trans community? How about honoring them along with every other American who volunteers to serve in the military to protect our country? If Trump thinks an 18 year campaign in the mountains of Afghanistan against an implacable guerilla army or a horrific battle like the one for Fallujah is so easy to carry out, why didn't he and his bone spurs volunteer for the Tet Offensive in Vietnam?
And why should people support an administration which cruelly separates children as young as 4 months old from their parents, holds preschoolers and elementary school aged children in steel mesh cages where some die for lack of medical treatment?
I don't belong to any craft blogs or sites, but I guess it's time I remedy that. Ravelry meet Rambler. I have this new project which consists of crocheting rainbow colored afghans for our troops of ALL backgrounds who will unfortunately be highly likely to be serving in yet another dreary new US engagement in the Middle East come next Christmas. Watch out, Iran! Our trans, female, black, and brown military is coming for you - despite what our president* says (and does) to them.
This afghan is for YOU, my trans military friends in Afghanistan!

Yup, we sure do! (You can read all about it at Ravelry. Which has over 8 million registered users.)
Yes 8 million registered users, counting all the disused accounts that were hacked a few years ago and are now being used to harass Ravelry: karma in action. That’s not counting the many socket puppet accounts. 8 million in their dreams.
They banned an entire group who opposed Obama in the last election. This is nothing new, just a Boston based man and wife team who are elite liberals atoning for their own white privilege. While all patterns that now have MAGA or Trump on them are banned, F*CK Trump ones are not. They will tell you they are an inclusive group, as long as you meet their definition of inclusive.
This couples livelihood is from their site. Controversy brings publicity. $$$$

C'mon on over to Ravelry, my friend. It's a great place. And this was before their taking a stand. Good for them.

We are banning support of Donald Trump and his administration on Ravelry.
This includes support in the form of forum posts, projects, patterns, profiles, and all other content.

You can help by flagging any of the following items if they constitute support for Trump or his administration
It felt good to be able to voice my opinion here. Any one who is not thanking Ravelry for their incredibly brave stance is ganged up on with “don’t let the door hit you on the way out” and other dismissive posts. There is only one way to think and to post, otherwise you are labeled a white supremist and do not belong there. It is their version of the Army’s “don’t ask, don’t tell”. You can support Trump, but anyone voicing it gets banned.
I don’t fit there anymore, not because of my political beliefs, but because I never liked having to put my head down on the desk in kindergarten because someone else couldn’t behave. There is very much a social media side to Ravelry. I’ve withdrawn from all groups I joined, but will continue to use their extensive pattern database and store my projects notes and my many photos on their site, that is all free.
I won’t be leaving in a flounce and deleting my account. I won’t be buying any patterns they take a percent from anymore or supporting any of their advertisers. I hope more unhappy, marginalized members use Ravelry’s free resources without giving any benefit to Ravelry: helping Ravelry to be hoisted by their own petard.
